... much less at an independent shop. my shop did the oil/filter, brake fluid, coolant, air filters, and lsd, in addition to the tranny for about $500.

thats a little frieghtning considering the parts/fluid costs alone on the services you mentioned are atleast 250$ for oem at wholesale price. I dont see how they'd keep their doors open if they are hooking people up that fat. I have to ask why they'd do the coolant too. Its good for 150k miles and 10yrs. little premature. what color is your coolant now?

OEM fluid is around $20 a bottle, Shell (which is on the approved list, and while advertised as a full synthetic, appears to be a semi synthetic) is about $5 a bottle in some places. $40 for the filter, drift pipe gasket and bolts (from my dealer, but my parts guy likes me)
It's pretty easy to do yourself, there is even a very detailed DIY for the 722.9 tranny on this site.
That said, dealer charge of about $400 give or take a few $$ is about right.
Don't mix the blue and the red, you can go up to blue, from red, once you do that, you have to stick with the newer fluid, you can never go back.
And no, there is no such thing as fluid that lasts for 150k, this is been debunked by independent folks for years, and even by MB themselves after getting many trannies borked and warranty repaired when they switched to this supposed long lasting tranny fluid.

Do it yourself
If you don't have a space for it then I am sure one of your friends may have a garage or maybe even a lift.
Good luck

You can go here: Mercedes-Benz Maintenance Manuals and input your vehicle information to pull up the maintenance manual for your vehicle.
It will tell you all of the required maintenance and the mileage or time it is required
