Is C63 (Silver) same as C63 BS (Red) caliper?

Yoh really astonished by the write up and detail obtained from your thorough research and calculations and of course the new engineered pistons. Do you guys know if those pistons will fit my 6 piston front callipers and 4 pistons rear callipers. My pads are the same as a CLK63 the non BS model. I couldn't find any front pads in my country, well province/state except for an individual who imports Remsa brake pads from Spain for my car and C63's as well as other sport model BMWs. I did some research and the Remsa brake pads do seem good quality as they have also been around the industry of braking for a long period of time.
If these pistons can work, pls pm with price for front sets and rear sets individually by pairs to my country South Africa.
I was scrutinizing my front pads with those round grooved marks made by the pistons on mine as you have illustrated in the first page of this topic.

So just for the front pistons are $500??
No rears? Or are the rears needed? Will your aggressive pads not fit the Silver caliper and would need these to go with it?

That's for the complete two front front 2x calipers (pistons, seals, boots).

It will make more sense for you to upgrade to the thicker pads along with the piston replacement.

We have other members inquiring bout re-finishing (powder coating) the calipers to Red color and rebuild the calipers with SS pistons, but like to see if other members are also interested in doing the same.

C63 pad (15.7mm) D1291:



GTR Pad (18.5mm) D1382:


Brake pad comparison:

Top is C63 pad, bottom is GTR pad.
Note C63 grooves were added; GTR pad is made w/o wear sensor connector.



So installing GTR pad is definitely more advantageous but just remember your pistons should have no cap plate, and that you will have to disable the wear sensor.

If fact we just had an RC F in our shop this morning for brake upgrade evaluation. It has a very similar pad as C63 @15.8mm, and here is the picture showing after replacing to GTR pads, you can see how beefy of the set up.



Installed with GTR thicker pads (18.7mm vs. OE 15.8mm)


Upgrade to RB two piece rotors (380x32mm)

No, it will allow for the use of their aftermarket pads, but EBC makes great aftermarket pads that don't require stainless pistons that are factory size.

Not quite. Calipers need to be rebuilt from time to time, depending on wear of the pistons, bad seals etc. Whenever you get uneven pad wear, the pistons are a possible cause. The rebuild kit from RB is an attractive option, since I do not think you can buy just parts from Mercedes. You would have to buy a complete caliper with pistons etc.

In addition to that the RB pistons give you less heat transmission to the brake fluid (good if you want to track the car) and also allow to use thicker pads, if you want to. RB has pads in OEM thickness or thicker (GTR pad). RB also has high temperature (silicone) dust boots (again, useful if your brakes get very hot). You have more choices.

If you replaced a perfectly good set of OEM pistons with RB pistons, you will not 'feel' a difference. They will work just the same.

Jon replaced his front two piece rotors to RB 4 years ago and they are still running strong.

And how RB pads slotting are strategically located to alleviate those stress cracks.

You can just replace, seal, boots or OE pistons to RB SS piston to not only cut down the heat transfer to brake fluid, but also allow you to use GTR thicker pads (18.5mm vs. OE 15.7mm) which is an excellent set up for track and street.

Is the P31 (non-BS) red caliper the same as the silver caliper except for the color? When changing out the OEM pads, I realized that my front, red body calipers have the flat top pistons. I re-used my OEM rotors since they are near new. It was quite difficult to put in the new XT910 pad, even after the pistons were pushed all the way back into the caliper body on each side.

It's quite often for the same part but OE (Brembo) use different P/N or color to deceive the consumers. The best way to make sure is to check the piston style inside "your" calipers.

Another tip when install a new pad or new rotor, you must compress the pistons all the way back because the pistons must extend out of caliper body to compensate the wear on pad/rotor, so you must restore the pistons back to it's original state to fit the new parts at nominal thickness.

By the way, for what it’s worth my red P31 front calipers do NOT have the hollow piston design. I have the same solid-faced pistons as shown in the first pic above on the silver brakes.

I want to change this ASAP because getting my new Carbotechs on yesterday with Ti shims was more difficult than it should have been.

Both OE pistons are made with hollow aluminum, except one has 1.5mm "steel cap".

With RB stainless steel pistons you DON'T need titanium shims, because it can cut down about 90% of heat transfer to brake fluid vs. aluminum pistons. The piston also has 6-vent cut which helps for quick brake release.
Less component is always a better practice in cost/maintenance, it also provide more direct and positive pedal response (w/o slippage between piston and pad) and save the shim space ~0.8mm for thicker pads.

Any chance you would know if I swap my red calipers and 390mm rotors for the silver calipers and 360mm rotors would I be able to clear 18” wheels in the front??

Red and silver calipers are the same. You just need the braket for 360mm rotors (and the rotors of course) and 18" wheels will fit.
360mm rotors was standard (front) on all C63's, regardless of color, except the Black Series which has the 390mm rotors in front.

Edit: just saw that you had a w205 which is a different story than w204. Your post is in wrong forum
