"No Wheel Sensors" after installing new wheels with aftermarket TPMS
 

I have a 2012 C63 coupe with P3q. So I had the shop install a new set of wheels and tires with aftermarket TPMS today. No problems with TPMS prior to today. The tires were mounted beforehand so that when I arrived at the shop they only put the wheels on.

I drove away, but about 2 miles later I filled with gas and the TPMS warning light came on (flashing) along with the warning "Tire Pressure Monitor Inoperative No Wheel Sensors" without giving me the ability to relearn or reset the sensors. Pressure was appropriate. The shop is very competent, as they are a distributor for Vorsteiner and my vehicle was the cheapest car our of 20 in the lot.

I turned the car off and restarted a few times an the warning keeps coming on. I called the shop right before closing and they were unsure of the problem and will bring it back in 2 days on my day off, but I am wondering if there might be a way for me to check. The valve stems are black, but more stiff that non-TPMS stems I have seen before.

Lookig at the valve stems, they are definitely rubberized but stiff.

1. Is our TPMS frequency 433 MHz, correct?
2. Is there an easy was to check if any of the TPMS are working versus not working? I would not want to just replace the entire set if it is just 1 battery or broken TPMS.
3. Is there a preferred or bad aftermarket TPMS manufacturer?
4. Do I need to have the car relearn or reprogram the new TPMS or anything?

Press okay on that screen to see if it will allow the vehicle to relearn the sensors. There was a recent post on something similar. The person went back to the shop and they fiddled around with the reprogramming and it worked after that. I had similar around 2 months ago with one sensor not showing up. They reprogrammed it and it worked afterward.

Did the TPMS work after you left the shop and before you stopped 2 miles later for gas? If that's the case, I'm totally puzzled.

Two probable causes. One is that it takes a while for the new TPMS to sync. I think mine took a couple days.
The other is that they installed TPMS for the wrong year. Need other readers to confirm, but I believe that the pre-2012 cars just gave you an alert, while the 2012 and newer TPMS system allows you to see the actual pressure in all 4 tires. If that's the case, the TPMS units use different frequencies and are not interchangeable. The shop probably has a tool to check the frequency to see if this is the cause.

Post 2010 or 2012 the C63 went to actual presssure monitoring, so normally I can see the pressure in each tire.

Clicking OK at that screen above does nothing.

The failure is still active today. I did not notice the warning right away, as I drove the car literally across the street to visit a friend, and then drove. I assume there might have been a delay for the car to register the lack of signal.

Does reprogramming the sensor require removal of the tire? Not thrilled about repeatedly removing tires.

I will ask if they have a tool to check.

i had same problem. My tpms werent compatable with the car. So i had to get new tpms.

car uses 433mhz

the car will auto learn so there is nothing you can do in the menu to reset.
tpms should not need to be programmed it should send a signal out and car will catch it.

i got these and they work on my 2012

Thanks. I will have to consider that if the shop put on the wrong sensors. I was clear that I had a 2012 C63, and hopefully they looked up the details.

So I got back to the shop and they could not get a reading from the sensors with 2 scan tools. They had to pull all 4 tires and reprogram the TPMS. The shop told me that the TPMS were supposed to be preprogrammed for the car when they ordered it, but apparently not.

I cannot remember the brand of sensor, but it was not Schrader. Works fine now.

TPMS sensors have a small internal battery. I gather that some manufacturers ship the sensors in "sleep" mode to conserve the battery charge, and they have to be activated to take them out of sleep mode. Don't know how your shop did this but there are tools available to do it wirelessly which don't require tire removal.

They had to pull it. They are a competent shop and I specifically asked them before they pulled the wheels the second time about wireless reprogramming and they told me it had be done with tire off.

I am very happy with the fit and finish of the wheels. Very flush, and now I see why running 275 in the rear could be a problem. This is stock height, and I actually like the amount of gap (not like it is a Camry or anything with an ungodly wheel gap).

Hi. I am having the exact same problem with my 2012 S550. W221. Car had winter tires (on separate set of rims). No issues with those. Put on summer tires (separate set of rims and TPMS sensors) with TPMS sensors. Exact same repeat of the issue you had. I went back to the tire shop (very reputable tire shop chain in this case too) a couple of times. They reprogrammed the TPMS in the car both times. But it doesn't stick. After I drive away, 5-10 minutes later the "Tire Pressure Monitor Inoperative No Wheel Sensors" message comes back.

On the C-class they just auto-learn on my 2013 c63, there is no programming
