Help Board ! Engine noise at startup !
Hello friend! Can you help me with the Council , you have a lot of experience and lot of knowledge unlike me. The situation is the following : when engine start , cold engine and hot start , sometimes the sound of the engine scares me , look at the link it looks like such a sound! What could be the reason? ( the mileage of the car is 20,000 miles , 2008 year )

Lots of people posting on this. I have posted on it multiple times check my history. My car still does it after the dealer replaced the cam adjusters. The dealer told me it's how they are after going to multiple dealers. I didn't believe them till they showed 3 diff cars one almost brand new and two customer cars that made the exact same noise. It's been 2 years with the noise and guess what car runs fantastic. It has to do with oil drain down vs an actual problem with adjuster. Unfortunately it's a design flaw. I bet you once you start it and it makes the noise you let it run for a minute. Shut the car off start it immediately again it will not make the noise. If it was truly broken it would make the noise every time. Regardless of oil in the unit or not. Some truly do break but they are typically constantly making noise they don't stop. Some will say theirs was fixed after repair I truly don't think so though mine wasn't.

0w40 is way too thin, it's like water. Use above.
If it's not cam adjusters it's the lifters bleeding down. You can replace them with the sls lifters.
I've been using shell rotella T6 5w40 and no noise on startup now. It's gasoline engine rated.

That ratcheting sound the OP has is most likely the adjuster. The lifter sound is not as sharp. Has a thicker cold weight helped others with the adjuster problem?

I've had zero issues with 0W40 M1 euro going on 5 years now. Buckets and cams were absolutely fine as well.

swapped to 5w40 and never once heard the noise after.like many have said m1 is way to thin.

Interesting. I wonder what the tolerances are in the adjusters.

While the M1 0w-40 is a better formulation than their 5w-40, I've been running the latter for 6 months (no track use, mostly storage) and my engine definitely sounds better.
I'll probably switch to the Rotella T6 5w-40 for track season

Today the dealer made a diagnosis of the engine , and found stored P0740 error! Wrong position of camshaft !

I think i have the same problem here. Can anyone confirm that dealership will replace the lifter with SLS parts for free under warranty? And I am going to track day in mid March, is it safe for the car? thanks!

reason think , not is the tappets , I observed , even if the engine is warmed up with a temperature of 100 ' C .! then switch off the engine for 20 minutes, and again start the engine , the sound can be repeated .

Dude, just bring your car to the dealer or specialist. You don't sound like you should be trying to guess what the problem is.

I don't get this guy. He starts two threads on the same thing after replying in the first one.
And then goes back into the first thread and edits all of his posts basically retracting and changing everything...
I'm genuinely at a loss.

It's just the norm here these days man. Tempted to get back into a Porsche just for the more intelligible forum discussion.
