Group Buy: DSS - Carbon Fiber Driveshaft
Group Buy: DSS (Driveshaft Shop) Carbon Fiber Driveshaft for W204 C63
Fellow forum members, I corresponded via email today with Frank, the owner of DSS. After a couple back-and-forths we came to an agreement: if we can get 10 forum members to purchase a carbon fiber driveshaft from DSS, the price will be $1,499 shipped (regular price is $1,699). There are several benefits of the DSS driveshaft vs. the stock C63 driveshaft and many here already understand those benefits. For those of you who do not, I will explain some of the differences here. The one-piece DSS driveshaft replaces the two-piece C63 driveshaft and also replaces the "squishy" rubber bushings on either end of the stock piece. The DSS piece is lighter, meaning less rotational mass and a smoother power delivery from the transmission to the rear wheels. Lastly, and most noticeably, throttle response is improved as it takes less "work" for the transmission to transfer energy and effort to the wheels. If you wish to add yourself to the list, please copy and paste the most recently updated list and add your name in the next slot. I'll go ahead and get us started here below. Please provide your MBWorld name as well as your first name and last initial. Once we get all 10 people, we'll need to call DSS individually and pay for our driveshafts in order for them to start production (which should take 3-4 weeks). Nice work. Did DSS happen to provide any technical specs on their unit - what is the weight vs OEM unit, how is it built, what is the hp/tq capacity, how are the joints made, etc etc etc? It would help if that were posted in here, and might give people more comfort and get us to 10 more easily.
I'm tentatively in, but call me old-school, I'd like to know exactly what I'm buying and installing in a pretty critical area. For instance will this require a driveshaft loop or some sort of shatter-shield, what's the failure rate of carbon vs steel, etc. I have more questions that I probably need to do research on.... (BLKROKT JimM) Can you point this thread to your DSS contact, let him know there's some potential sales here and see if he's up for a AMA, or at least a post or two? Also, while it might be optimistic, any chance for a tiered group buy? (i.e. if 15 signups, another $200 off, etc?) Subbed for updates. Cheers, |

I tried to push for more, but Frank said we were approaching dealer pricing and he was not willing to go any deeper than this. The price is $200 off their regular price and half the price of the Weistec piece. Honestly, I did this for the community because it seemed like there was interest in a CF Driveshaft group buy. I have no issue paying $1,699 for one, so if we don't get 10 people I'll just go that route. |

Am in )) DENI +1
I would like to know there any proof it will be lighter than stock ))? thank you |
+1....interested in joining the GB
Would like to know some of the specs as well. Also I assume this is a direct bolt on application? |
All i really care about is how much lighter it is compared to stock item
|
Yeah, if it is not lighter there is no real point in CF drive shaft other than bragging rights.
|
100% there is no point if its not lighter
|
Hey Kevin, thanks for setting this up.
Please add me to the list |
It's definitely lighter. The question is if it's strong enough. My guess is that you're going to be right on the limit Brad.

My assumption is that if you come back and all of your concerns are satisfied, this group buy will fill up fast. |
Google "broken cf driveshaft"... You'll see a lot of hits on helcat, svt, etc forums.

I'm surprised the Admins from IB hasn't locked down this non-paying group buy...

Would love more specs on the drive shaft. I'm interested but I also know these things cause issues if not made correctly as well. DSS being a reputable company I'm sure it will be okay.
But still would like more tech info as others have posted. |
So they have 10 in stock, or will begin making them once 10 people are on the list? If so what's the lead time ?

If it works Im in for 2 units!

Ok guys I called the drive shaft shop and here is a little info, there is also more specs on their website.
Weight is 24-25 pounds power handling is rated for 1000+ torque 1 piece shaft and they do dampen under load so that it's not as much shock to the trans or differential. From what they said the whole unit is half the weight of the stock unit. |
