Speaker quality - How many hours befor they fail?

Just wondering. Are the C63 speakers known to last a long time? I really enjoy listening to some Lawerence Welk while I drive my C63 15mph under the speed limit in order to preserve the precious and delicate internals.

One day, while listening to a particularly rousing Polka ditty, I was alerted to the fact that I was playing it at a rather high level, and the accordionist seemed out of tune. Before I play any more of my record-to-tape-to-CD-to-digital conversions, can anyone give me an idea of exactly how many hours the speakers are good for before requiring a rebuild?

The speakers in my old Mustang for instance were terrible, and I couldn't blast my Glen Miller "Moonlight Seranade" at more than 50% volume (and everyone knows you have to play Glen Miller at very high volume to enjoy it properly).

287K hours. Maybe 288K hours though depending on where you live.

Are you sure? Could it be 250k hours? What if I play the volume at 10%, will my precious speakers last longer?

If you set the balance all the way forward, then all the way back when they blow, you can get at least twice the life.

Just change your oil, as long as none got by your muffler hangers, the speakers should last no problem.

Page 387 of the manual says that playing Lawrence Welk, Andy Willams and Pat Boone with cause speaker failure and will cause transmission failure at 287000 miles +/- 100000 and is neither are covered by warranty.

But what about the crossovers? Thats fairly new technology.

According to the forum members on the Consumer Reports website, the crossovers used in the speakers for the Kia Soul are likely to burn out with only 2000 hrs of Selena Gomez music. Can you imagine what Tommy Dorsey could do?

If I get them super shiny will that help prolong their life?

You could always just get a Black Series.

Their crossovers are mega stout. Same as in the SLS.

EDIT. This was my 2500th post! Took almost 6 years. What a slug.
Jim G will be there by months end.

As long as you changed your headbolts and are using the proper size wheel spacers and brake pads, you should be fine.

I'm glad I don't have an AMG, I would probably have to take out an equity loan on my house to replace those HK speakers.

Oh my god I had no idea I was in such an emergency situation guys.

Shouldn't speakers last more than 3 months of continuous Glen Miller, Count Basie and Lawerance Welk usage? And Pat Boone too, maybe some Beach Boys thrown in for when I'm feeling particularly randy.

Is there a TSB for this problem?

Does anyone have the engineering diagrams for the speakers?

I'm really worried. I went through this with my dearly beloved Mustang, and I couldn't bear it if it were to happen to my C63.

Jim,

The w204 platform has a special feature that as you get into higher rpm's, the audio is turned up automatically to mask the engine noise. Occasionally driving on the highway in a low gear at 6000rpm reduces your speaker life dramatically. Factor that in with your track days, and you are highly at risk for speaker failure.

Like Corvette, Camaro or SSR transmissions if not abused, quote "they last a long time..."

I'm still trying to figure what's "a long time"?

According to the manual - playing country music voids the warranty for not only the speakers but the resonant frequency from country music and high likelihood of using your car as a second residence voids the power train warranty as well (page 159).

I decided it wasn't worth the risk and the stress was killing me so I got me LTHs and now I doesn't has to listen to any stinken music on the infotainment.

Hang on, something important is missing... How often do you use navigation? Is your music volume and nav voice volume set at the same level? That can also play a role in speaker longevity.

Personally, I set Nav low because I'll just wait until I hear something different and then glance at the screen quick. After all, wouldn't want premature wear by some loud nav voice.

Did your old Mustang have nav? Just trying to connect some dots.

Wait. Are you telling me that NAV and my golden oldies volumes can be set INDEPENDENTLY?

Woah.

Of course my Mustang had NAV. I even had the coveted "Billy Ray Cyrus" voiceover on mine. But that's irrelevant.

I still think something's wrong though. Even though nothing's wrong. The Kia crossover problem must indicate a fundamental flaw in all car speakers. Are you sure there's no speaker recall?

Does anyone have the technical documents or engineering diagrams I asked for. Twice.

Jim

Could be completely unrelated, or just what we need to connect the technical dots, but here is a thread where a Viper owner also has a stereo complaint... His being a bad subwoofer:

http://www.viperalley.com/forum/vipe...d-quality.html

One guy even said he doesn't bother turning it on at all. And he means business because he still listens to music on CD's.

Perhaps they are manufactured by the same company who is ready to get slapped with a large recall

Are you sure you're asking your question the right way? Maybe that is why we can't seem to get a response you actually value...
