722.9 AMS/EXEDY clutch pack upgrade

5 Attachment(s)
Figured i'd try and post a constructive/productive thread.

I consider AMS to be highly regarded in the tuning world, and Exedy has always put out quality products so i figured id look into this.

I found quite a few Local E63 members with Upgraded turbo's posting about beefing up their
722.9 MCT's. I noticed they were using the AMS/alpha Exedy upgraded friction discs.
I did not know they existed before this. So I did some part searching and noticed that between all of the 722.9 transmission's a the K1/K2 clutch packs share some of the same part numbers. The K3 must have had a different friction material from factory to handle the E63's power output. I then went to the Local transmission shop that had been performing all of the upgrades.

TAT short for Toronto Automatic Transmission. Local to me in Toronto, Canada.
I spoke with the owner's Bob and Matt. Bob assured me that the 722.9's share the same clutch
pack designs and that the ams upgrade would work in my pre mct 722.9.

So, i took the plunge and ordered the friction upgrade from AMS and grabbed a weistec trans pan while i was at it.
Sure enough, Bob was correct and everything is buttoned up and ready for my future blower upgrade, they also installed my DSS carbon drive shaft. Now to figure out which way to go...

It is rated for 1000 ft lbs, so we'll see how it holds up in the future. So far the E63's are making anywhere from 7-800 awhp and seem to be coping well.

If you around the Toronto area, these guys are awesome, and they all have AMG's to boot.

did you upgrade to a Weistec valve body as well?

ritalin 07-10-2017 07:13 PM

No. I figured since weistec no longer offers the valve body upgrade with the trans build kit, that it wasn't a necessity.

BLKROKT 07-10-2017 07:20 PM

That's really good info, thanks for sharing.

Coincidentally, I was just looking today at the Weistec clutch packs, and came across this document which is an interesting read. Trying to read up and understand the components better. http://weistec.com/media-events-press/7229transmission/

Anyway, their trans build package includes
Key Features:
Complete Package
Increased Torque Capacity
Weistec Performance Clutch Material
Increased Number of Discs per Clutch Pack
Redesigned Clutch Piston Geometry
Increased Frictional Surface Area
Increased Clutch Material
New OEM Gaskets and Seals
New OEM Fasteners and Hardware

Not sure what they change with the "Redesigned Clutch Piston Geometry" or if "Increased Number of Discs per Clutch Pack" makes a difference. Based on what you bought from AMS, what do you think?

WOWWWWWW good job bud :) what did the upgrade cost if you dont mind me asking??

impressive work

ritalin 07-10-2017 07:26 PM

BLKROKT,

I believe the approach is similar although i could not find much more info about the weistec upgrade pack, other than the experience Bob has with doing them. As far as i was told, there isnt much more than i got in the AMS/exedy setup that you require. The weistec kit offers more components for sure.
TAT has first hand experience with both.
From what i understand, the k1/k2 and k3 packs do the job of holding all the torque. If you read up on the AMS setup. The execution sounds very much the same. More discs, better material etc...

Thanks Brad.

I'll let you know the total in a day or two. Haven't settled up just yet.

Do they not offer it at all anymore as a stand alone purchase? Or do you have to get your transmission "bullet proofed" by them in order to purchase?

I'm not 100 percent certain. But that sounds right due to potential damage to the valve body in transit. I think they will do it, but if your not sending the entire transmission, you send the valve body at your own risk.

you are exactly right, when I built my trans Weistec said with the V2 clutches there really is no need for the valve body tuning and that it would be more or less redundant.

Do you have the part numbers handy for the friction discs you ordered?

I posted a pic of the package.
It's available exclusively through AMS.

Jasonoff 07-11-2017 09:15 AM

Is it this one?

Validation

Couple months ago I wrote to AMS interested in their clutch upgrade for my 2012-C63 and they said it won't fit since is the same 722.9 transmission but every car model has some variation in the transmission so they can't guarantee proper fit.
I also check with Dodson and they told me that they are in R&D without a precise date to finish it.

So, we have no other option than Weistec?

Interested in your comments...

Did you even read the first post? :smash: The AMS/Exedy clutch packs apparently fit fine.

Awesome upgrade!

Curious to know the total as well! Hows the new Drive Shaft?

So what does this do?

AMGonFire 07-11-2017 11:40 AM

Cool stuff. Would you guys agree that for most this is not needed. Unless your stage 3 supercharger or more? Maybe stage 2??

shardul 07-11-2017 12:46 PM

I have sold a few AMS kits to the E63 MCT guys.
I can get this kit at a little bit of a discount from AMS
PM me

ritalin 07-11-2017 04:16 PM

Kris.

The car drives great, i cant give a lot of feedback yet as i have to break in the clutch packs to seat them properly.
A lot more feel through the driveline, positive firm feel to the shifts.

Man why you always such a jerk? You need more sex in your life because you are always hating everybody's post. Look for something else to do with your life.

I am trying to share some thoughts about what I have found about the clutch upgrade and as of today nobody has done clutch upgrade other than Weistec for the C63 even outside of US.

Ritalin start a good discussion and I hope he open a new direction for C63 clutch upgrade.

Your "thought" after not reading the post was to ask "So we have no other option than Weistec?"

Seriously? The post was all about there being another option to Weistec. Renntech makes upgraded clutch plates too. Ok, AMS told you they don't work. The OP has shown that they do. What was your point again?

I was just pointing out that your post was retarded. Retarded people don't know they're retarded until it's pointed out. I was doing you a favor. You're welcome.
