What setup would you guys recommend

I'm trying to decide what to do with my car and run few options by you guys.

My main goal is keeping that amg bark and not making the car sound raspy or drone and my number 1 goal is to keep the throaty amg bark and grumble it has from the factory.

Here is what I got.

Fi headers, mids, xpipe and high flow cats stock res/mufflers

Option 1
Headers,300 cell, xpipe

Option 2
Headers,300 cell, straight

Option 3
Headers,no cats ,xpipe

Options 4
Headers,no cats, straight

NotABaller 07-22-2017 02:25 AM

Straight pipe the cats for more sound. If you want even more then straight pipe the reso too and put a welded H in place of the cats.

Savage-wp 07-22-2017 05:02 AM

Headers, with straight pipes through the secondaries. If you keep the stock resonator you don't need an X pipe.
Mine is like that, and it sounds completely mental at WOT.

Option 5: straight pipe everything and leave the resonator. It's still loud but when cruising or driving normal its civilized. If you don't like it, it's a simple delete. I used to have straight pipe then X-pipe but it sounded weird. Like a mustang.

BLKROKT 07-22-2017 07:12 AM

Option 6?

Seriously though - headers to 200cell cats, xpipe, then straight piped all the way back to mufflers. Sounds great.

skratch77 07-22-2017 07:51 AM

I guess I can try the xpipe and straight pipe easily because they are bolt on with the kit but doing the cats would require custom piping made.

I think I'm going to have that piping made and try to record all setups lol

Most are picking straight in the poll and I thought we needed an xpipe to calm the cat down without cats

H-pipe in place of secondary cats. Straight pipes in place of resonator. With headers this provides a nice balance.

That's another option I thought of but wanted to try to keep the back section in place.

I could try no cats and h pipe instead of an xpipe before the resonators.

Jim is that what you meant by tuning after installing the 82 mm throttle bodies ?

Ive been thinking a lot about this, i have an x pipe and also kept the resonator on. I didn't pull the resonator cause I don't want the car to be out of control loud, its loud as is. I understand the resonator is an H pipe so why have an x pipe and a H pipe, i think i might drop the x pipe or do i keep the X and drop the resonator?:nix:

AMGonFire 07-23-2017 12:43 AM

I really like my setup catless headers, mid, xpipe to stock rest of exaust resonator and mufflers. Sounds great. Cruising sounds stock wide open it hauls and sounds the part. The bark is def there.

MTV10 07-24-2017 09:15 AM

Definitely don't use an X-Pipe if you want to retain the factory 'bark'

Don't listen to this guy, he literally knows nothing. You need an X-pipe to retain that sound.

This is correct

Who the hell is saying you lose the bark with an x-pipe? I have ARH LTHs, catless x-pipe into the stock resonator and back. The car is just nasty sounding with plenty of bark. More pops and burbles than any "burble/fart/pop tune." I can't get on youtube to attach my video comparing my stock exhaust with my current setup but there is no issue with lack of bark.

no it is not

If you live in a state with lax emission laws, def consider Cat-less setup, especially if you are performance minded. Cat-less will run a few dB louder, but you don't lose any power

I actually don't have too many clips yet of my car.

Here is a video from the drags from a while ago. Mine is the louder car, so you can hear it over the other C63.

Facebook Post

And another video just messing around outside my factory.

LOL they just don't know ;)
I also run the exact same setup as Chris.
To echo his previous sentiments:
It barks and pops LIKE THE WORLD IS ENDING. And yes, that bark is definitely the characteristic AMG bark. Only now, it's louder. But only really over 3K RPM.

chrisridebike8 07-24-2017 05:42 PM

ARH LTHs, catless x-pipe

BLKROKT 07-24-2017 05:49 PM

Chris, your car sounds great man :y

MBNRG 07-24-2017 05:57 PM

Another consideration is coating for the headers, esp if you lookin to keep temps down during track sessions, and esp if you are looking to upgrade to SC further down the line. White Lightning ceramic coating by Swaintech is arguably the best, and reasonably priced. Some say you only need coating from headers to a bit passed the collectors, but I opted to coat all piping up to resonator, and it was ~$700 USD including shipping to Midwest.

Once installed, you will not want to remove the headers to apply coating ;)
