Why You Don't Buy Cheap Tires

C63 content (disclaimer: I haven't finished the video yet, but thought this was a great conincidence to stumble across given all of the new owners looking to cheap out on critical equipment for their AMGs)

I don't have the slightest idea why you would buy cheap tires for any vehicle. I understand being on a budget, but do you weigh safety against tire money? That guy pretty much hit every nail on why you shouldn't.

That one is pretty obvious. Only total retards do that. Surely that doesn't need a video.

There are a lot of people who don't care about their tires - a few have posted on these forums.
I just don't understand why someone would spend the money we do on a performance car that accelerates, corners, and brakes exceptionally - only to put a set of tires on it that compromise all that performance they just paid for.

Most people (not just MB, I've worked in retail/tire shops for 10 years prior), that justify cheap tires, have never actually had good tires and used them properly. I run very good tires on all my vehicles, to the point of overkill, but when people look at me silly for putting a $600 set of bridgestone tires on a little toyota tercel, I don't care. I know my car will turn and stop in the wet as well as it does in the dry, and that's worth whatever it takes. I've had cheap tires on a car I just bought cause me to lock up and skid and clip a car during panic braking, I know if I had my choice of tires on there that doesn't happen.

I highly suggest people try actual good tires (not even necessarily OEM, as factory MB tires can easily be improved on), and then consider if a few dollars is worth the trade off. You can have the best brakes in the world, but if the tires are garbage, they can't slow the car down. Aside from the performance/fun, it's a safety thing.

I suspect it's the same with people who run cheap brakes.

I couldn't agree more - same story here with me

That being said, it's safe to say we're more enthusiastic about our cars that Joe Average. I'm referring to Joe Average who buys a performance car...most people are in it for the status and the odd highway pull, thus for them, tyres are just a legal and basic requirement, not a necessity to extract the best out of their cars.

I randomly ran across this vid on YouTube over the weekend. It made me laugh. Why anyone would every cheap out on safety equipment is beyond me but those people are out there sharing the road with you every day.

Steel Grey Metallic C63!!
The people who use cheap tires and cheap brakes are probably the same people that only uses 87 octane and wonder why they are down on power...

Definitely. I had nicely upgraded brakes on my Cobalt SS way back when, and one friend in particular thought I was crazy for it. I took him for a ride and almost put him through the windshield, and he couldn't believe it.

This same person let his brakes wear to the point of the pad falling out, then put a piece of wood (not making this up!) in place of the pad so he could drive the car to me to install the new brakes he bought off ebay. Prior to this, I was tuning his car after installing a nitrous kit, didn't test the brakes well before (my fault), almost crashed the car when some guy pulled out in front of me way down the road, and I stopped with all the car had and it was just not enough. I was spoiled by my car braking so well all the time.

One thing I will say, you can buy very reasonably priced brake pads from good companies for not a lot of money, Raybestos makes mid-grade pads that are perfectly adequate for any driving situation aside from track use and they are usually $30-40/set. You don't have to spend $90 to get good brake pads, but the stuff you can buy for $14 is gonna be garbage.

The Kuhmo isn't a knock off tire, just a budget tire. Those chinese brands that you've never heard of before (Windforce, Ling Long, Triangle, there's hundreds) are truly knockoff tires.

The PSS is a great tire (a bit overpriced but you pay for the name), and will outperform pretty much any budget tires, but a cheaper decent tire like a Kuhmo is way better than some china brand Rottela or whatever like in the vid.

Road and Track compared them and the Michelin won, but not by much.

The going standard here for brakes is 350-500 a set or your not one of the cool kids and will immediately burst into flames.

Yeah that's internet BS and crowd mentality at it's finest. There are literally hundreds of brake options out there. You can get nice quality Centric, Brembo, or other non-OEM parts that are very good for a reasonable price. Or you can buy real garbage for cheap. If you can't figure out the difference and think only buying OEM from a dealer is acceptable, that's what works for you and it will certainly keep your car working like new, and you keep me employed so I'm thankful.
