Help Needed on High Flow Cats

2013 C63 P31 with MBH LTH > MBH mid-xpipes in California. I originally had LTH > stock secondary but the sound just wasn't enough for me. I got the mid pipes with x-pipes installed and LOVE the new exhaust note but the smell is now murdering my nose.... I need some info on some high flow cats. I did some research and havent really gotten a satisfactory answer. I'm looking for 200 cell HFC with a metal core. Does anyone here have a similar setup that can chime in on what brand they used, did it fix the smell, did the sound change drastically, etc.

Are you sure you don't have an exhaust leak somewhere? I run catless LTHs and even with the windows down in traffic I hardly smell anything.

Yes, search for flowmaster 200 cell cats on eBay and you'll find what you're looking for. They're $84.95 a piece. Just installed two of them yesterday. Quality is great and the 2.5" version fit perfectly. Sound hasn't changed much unfortunately but the smell is gone. My car stunk like crazy with no cats.

Doesn't MBH still sell an x-pipe with hi-flow cats specifically? I believe they even have a setup with quick-swap parts to go back and forth between catted and decatted.

Being in CA, you're going to want the option of swapping back to cats easily.

Wow, $400 each! Thats insane. What does that cat do that the $85 Flowmaster does not? Besides lighten your wallet

I can't compare them to the cheap cats yet.
I do know that they Flow, they are built to handle more power and reduce emissions.
I have seen aftermarket cats **** the bed and also plug up, possibly due to poor tuning or the lack of working as they should. Also not ideal for high power levels.
I will report back on them once installed and my V7 is modified.
I was going to install a blower this year so I am planning ahead, likely waiting on that as I have other things on the go at the moment.

Some cats are actually designed to give you a long service life. Precious metals are called that for a reason - how many grams do you think Flowmaster uses in an $85 cat?

I've decatted every car I've owned for the last 30 years and nothing has stunk as much as this one.
Yeah, I’ve been looking into that as well but seen some post saying that the cats can only accommodate 5.9L and below. Anyone else here ran flowmaster for 1 year+ and not have an issue?

yeah they do but im not going to pay $1500 or so for a new midpipe with cats. Plus being in CA, no company sells CARB compliant high flow cats. No mods are allowed whatsoever to cats so the quick swap is useless. Cops catch you and best believe you're back to completely stock lol

You get what you pay for. If you search up the porsche forums, there have been many tests to show that HFCs like the vibrant or even better (HJS) cats have almost identical flow to catless with little to no power loss. However they do cost about a grand shipped.

Detailed tests here:

The exhaust/Dyno shop that installed the flowmasters (and recommended them) has been using them for years without issue. These guys are on Street Outlaws on a regular basis and know their sheet. I was assured that not only did they last, but for a street application there'd be zero
hp loss. I haven't dynod yet but I ran 118 mph at the strip without them and 120 with them (installed flexfuel kit in between) in warmer weather, so make of that what you will.

The precious metals are the catalyst. They're what convert the gasses, and while that may be great for the environment, I'm not sure what bearing it has on longevity.

I was talking about the functionality of the cat as per its intended use. There is the minimum level of precious metal that inexpensive cats use just to operate properly initially and then there is "OE-level" which would meet or exceed the 8/80k requirement. CARB requirements range from 7/70k to 15/150k depending upon vehicle type. The substrate in a cheap cat is going to outlast the precious metals, we can agree on that.

few months with no issues.I offered 85 each and he accepted.

put down 460whp with them and should be back on the dyno soon with my final setup and tuning.

will likely hit 470-480whp with them but who knows how much they are holding me back. 10-15whp is worth not having your clothes smell like fumes by just starting the car

Those are great numbers! I doubt they will cost you that much hp. Hell, you could see right through mine. I'm going to dyno again Thursday but the weather has gotten hot so I'm not sure how much of a comparison can be drawn.
