custom c63 intake guide

o i recently saw a few e55s installing this red intake guide thing in there grills and it made me think why dont we have one for our c63's. So i figured i could attempt to make my own off the stock one, i do have a some body work experience so i said why not try it. Heres how far ive gotten so far, let me know what you guys think!

Kinda reminds me of the TTM E55 scoops. The theory is there I suppose.

It's one of those things that doesn't show up on a dyno or airflow log, but it might show up in trap speed at the strip. I've spoke to a couple of E63 guys that have removed the front grille entirely for road and track racing...supposedly it helps to remove it. Therefore....maybe this might be a good halfway house between having a grille and not having one at all...only one way to find out. Let us know how you get on :)

I like it. The “Gruppe M” style carbon intakes do the same thing, but the scoops are not as low. Your power steering cooler is now blocked a bit so keep an eye on that. The carbon intake was worth about 0.1 and 1mph in the 1/4.

A lot of the 335 guys do them in red, looks kinda cool but has no gain on a turbo car as it is sucking air at a significantly higher rate than any ram air effect, but on an N/A car it may have some benefits and would look cool also in red!

I've been looking a bit into this, but everything is too hard/expensive lol.

This reminds me the RPi scoops over on the BMW M side. I had it on my E60 M5 and you noticed a difference past 60mph.

thanks for all the great input guys! i got it primered today just need to do a final block and sand before i can shoot. so hopefully ill be able to post pics soon. i feel like driving lately without tho the car doesnt respond as quickly because no air guidance, but maybe its all in my head.

Super intetesting... I might try that too. What material are you using to make the scopes? Fiber Glass?

i used abs plastic, some crazy 2 part epoxy glue, and bondo to smoothen out.

There may be some potential added air flow, if the top portion of the front grill (that attaches to the hood with screws) is removed.

At least on FL. Not sure about the PFL grill.

Then you would get that whistle wouldn't you?

I wouldn't get too picky with it. Realistically it would be easier to pop out the fog lights but that system doesn't really work on these cars lol.

IIRC, the whistle was attributed to faulty or incorrectly seated rubber weather stripping between the top of this upper grill trim piece and bottom edge of hood.

If we're going the lengths to modify the stock intake guide, why not try to further optimize air flow ;) Seems Dad's et al ran the same mod:
https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-amg-w...ow-intake.html

Been thinking about something like the Magnuson lower airboxes that have greater volume than our stockers. . . That, plus larger airbox lids with larger Y-pipe a la Renntech, all connected to a 'cold ram air' type CF intake feeding dual 82mm TB's may be the ticket to optimized NA air delivery. Then dyno tune to take full advantage of increased air flow

Removal of the PFL fog lights provides one with an air path for duct installation for brake cooling, but yes, it may be too difficult to try and route that new air path into intake.
