Called a store for a brake job quote and they took my vin. Called me and told me there is “no solid rotors” for my car and it’ll be like $4000 for the brake job.

I thought our P30 cars were 1.5 piece which is replaceable with the much cheaper 1 piece rotors? So by 2 piece does he actually mean 1.5?

The "2-piece" term is used interchangeably between the older P30 true 2-piece and the newer co-cast 2-piece rotors, which actually are 2 pieces, but are not separable. All the rotors for these cars are interchangeable except for the Black Series.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the newer co-cast 2-piece rotors. I'd either go 1-piece if I'm trying to save cash, or go with the older P30, true 2-piece rotors from FCP Euro, where you can buy the pair for $900 and replace them indefinitely with FCP's lifetime replacement warranty. I will be doing the latter option this summer.

The 2, 1.5 & 1 piece rotors place the rotor surface in the exact same spot and all interchangeable.

The difference in all 3 are basically just how the rotor surface is attached to the hat.

he must not be an MBWorld member. he isn't necessarily wrong, but he isn't 100% right either. can't really blame him honestly. you can buy replacement rotor rings and hardware if you search the forums if you want to go that route, but going with a 1 or 1.5 is probably cheaper.

You probably want new rotor retaining screws, mine were corroded so needed new ones anyways. I think, though don't quote me, but some of the bolts attaching the caliper are one time use. Oh and some anti-squeal on the pads. Actually, check with FCP Euro, I can't remember but when I purchased my true 2-piece Brembo rotors, I think they included new retaining screws. Cheers

ECS tuning has kits. FCP Euro does as well. I have heard nothing but good things about both. FCP Euro allows you to turn in worn pads and rotors for new ones FREE though.

Is fhaf rotor retaining screw necessary? I had my front discs replaced a couple months back and for some reason they left them off. Can't remember why he said but he didn't replace them.


​​​​​​Edit : I just asked him about it as I'm actually heading there for tires today and he said the new rotors we put on didn't have holes for them. So there's my answer I guess.

Yeah true, and my locating screw had to be cut off as it was so corroded, so they could remove the rotor. They didn't bother addressing what was left because my shop also told me "it isn't really necessary" as the caliper and wheel hold the rotor. So, I was just sayin, good to replace so avoid that issue.

Maybe this is a good place to ask:

Do you guys know if the 1.5 piece rotors of the P31 are floating rotors?
The 2 piece are.
Floating rotors are the best remedy for knock-back.
I have a Brembo GT kit on my Subaru. I bought a replacement kit of friction rings for $600.

Where I am going is that the Brembo distributors may have a friction ring with the McLaren nuts kit and it may not be that bad.

Also the Mercedes parts literature separate calipers, pads for the 2 piece. I didn't check the 1:.5.
This doesn't mean that the rotors cannot be swapped.

The 1.5 are not true floating, they are basically 1 piece with holes in the hat.

It's a little more than holes in the hat; I believe the outer iron ring is cast first, then placed into a mold where they cast the hat out of aluminum which interlocks with iron "ring". Basically, you get the lightweight properties of a 2 piece rotor, with reduced production costs since you don't need hardware or labor for assembly.

The trade-off is that the rings can never be replaced, and it is't a floating design.

It's funny, because when you understand the reason why they made the co-cast version, it becomes very clear that they should be far cheaper than the 2-piece P30, but clearly someone's making serious cash on them.

I think the co-cast rotors are floating. They float, at least to the extent that they allow for the difference in contraction and expansion rates of the different metals that are used in their construction.

Interesting, I didn't know the hat was aluminum. I thought the whole thing was iron.

When I eventually do my brakes sometime this summer, I will confirm with a magnet. I'm going to replace my P31 rotors with P30 2-piece since it can be had for cheaper.

Got the kit shipped to Lewiston and drove down to pick it up. Even with exchange, the entire kit for all 4 corners with pads ended up being less then just 2 new 1.5 piece rotors.
