First Ever Night Event At Cota

I had a blast at the first nighttime HPDE at Cota two Fridays ago. Track was hot 3-11 pm and each run group had 5 sessions. Only the last two sessions were under the lights though.

That's a great photo. I'm really surprised at the contrast between the glowing front rotors and the invisible rear rotors. I though they would be doing a similar amount of work.

If you look closely, the rears are glowing too just not to the extent that the front ones are. Makes complete sense though when you think about the physics of weight transfer in a car. That is, as noted above me, why the front brakes are always larger than the rears are.

- On track I use CarboTech XP-12's. They have great stopping power and I get decent life out of them. I don't specifically keep track of how many track days they last as I use them up and then buy more. But I would guess 6+ days at 5 sessions (25 minutes) each day.

Nice man! I’m so jealous, I’m dying to drive COTA. Hopefully I can make it happen next spring.

Thats exactly what I’m getting out of the XP12 fronts. 6 days with that being the absolute limit. About twice that for the rears, maybe a little more. I’m thinking about moving to the XP20 compound for the fronts since I got a lot more out of my RB rotors than expected (I need new rings at the end of this summer, making it 3 seasons on them). XP16 would actually be perfect, but sadly they don’t make it anymore. I might ask them if they can make a run of fronts in XP16 if I order 10 sets. Let me know if you’d be interested to split that if they’ll do it.

Yeah, they had the portable lights set at a lot of corners but not all. They lit just enough to gauge your turn in but the rest was mental/muscle memory - and headlights. The first time I cranked it up the hill from pit out into the dark was exhilarating. It was a never before seen sight by us weekend warriors. I wish my video turned out better but I didn't tighten down one of the screws well enough and each time I hit the rumble strip at T8 my camera tilted more and more up towards the sky. Oh well.

I know it would be a long trip for the East coast but if you can make it it would be worth it. It would be great to meet the other track enthusiasts.
As far as the XP20's go if we can get a third person to buy in then I'd be interested. I am trying to reduce my personal garage stock of brake pads, tires, etc. So three sets would be my max. Or if you and another each wanted four and I took two that would work also.

Come on out, the more the merrier. Next event is early October. Depending on the temperatures I may or may not drive though. I've decided not to punish my car in the heat anymore. I'll still be out there to instruct but I may not drive.
