4LT charger - let’s talk about whose done it

Whose upgraded from the stage 3 Weistec 2.9 whipple to the big bad boy 4LT whipple?

just cruisous to see if any of you are on here and just wanting to start a general chat about it.

Honest question, but is the supercharger the limiting factor in more power? Many other platforms getting over 900 whp from the 2.9L....It's good for up to 25 psi. I have only heard of a couple on here I think going to a 67mm pulley. Think there is much more room on the table as far as charger. Think it's a matter of motor/drive train handling it.

RNS-11Z 03-13-2019 09:27 AM

From reading around on our motors the 2.9 starts blowing heat after 12/14psi. For reliable efficient power, the 60mm pulley is best. Happy to be proven wrong.

clk63cab 03-13-2019 09:50 AM

Wasn't sure never had a weistec or whipple setup on the M156. What about 3rd gen Whipple with the larger intercooler, still same area? We had a TVS setup for a short stint, nowhere near the power of weistec unit...

I posted a thread on e85, thinking that it would help blower setups run more efficient...

G_Money 03-13-2019 12:50 PM

Stock fuel delivery is a big limiter.

mr747 03-13-2019 07:19 PM

H is talking about full built engine full ported heads full fuel system built

Yes the Gen 3 blower works better then gen2 blower but its comes with alot of mass airflow issues as clearances are to tight (my car is still not running properly) factory ecu is struggling to keep up

H i think the next mod honestly should be a ECU upgrade

Brad you’ve got to be thinking about moving to the SYVECS by now?

If we cant work out how to tune out these issues i have no other option as my car just plays up down low anything from 2k to 4k just shuts down banks

Das_it16 03-26-2019 03:03 PM

JRCart's CLK63 ran a 4.0L whipple and different trans. I believe it was a TH400 but I could be wrong.

RNS-11Z 03-26-2019 04:28 PM

Yeah he did, but Weistec won’t sell 4lt charger. I can buy a bare 4lt charger from whipple but not worth the cost for me at the moment. I’m going to look at improving cooling efficiency as anything over the 60mm just generates too much heat that the Weistec cooler can not over come. Like brad, Syvecs would be my next option.

Hit up Dan Schoneck over at Schoneck Composites. Here’s his profile:
https://mbworld.org/forums/members/306132-dans776.html
He can help you lower the IATs in that manifold.
He just put a bigger intercocoler in E55 2.9L whipple.
Here’s a few photos of his work. He ports the intake, bigger intercooler I believe it was 1.5” thicker in overall diameter and adds a thicker blower plate.

He just got the manifold back last week and went straight to the track on Saturday. Almost hitting 9s.

Awesome thank you

RNS-11Z 03-26-2019 07:30 PM

I should note, I have the upgraded Weistec cooler. At some point they made a change. The bigger water lines is something that I think will help for sure.

Dan has not worked on a m156 just yet

He has a test car but his yet to work on it

Hopefully in the next month or so he will get cracking

Also H i found out a couple things about the 4litre
1. 4 litre blower is to heavy for our crank and it will snap nose of it
2. You have to modify the stock crank and put a bearing on it
3. to run 4litre you will have to open motor :(

looks like turbo’s is next step then lol

mr747 03-26-2019 08:03 PM

It will be cheaper LOL

BLKROKT 03-26-2019 09:45 PM

Where are you guys thinking for turbo placement? At the end of the headers or even further back would suck. If you can relocate or remove the ABS unit, you could easily put a couple on either side of the engine bay and pipe routing would be short and easier. Of course then tuning is the challenge...

could potentially do a rear mount setup. Stand alone would be the only way to go but then again it’s a test and tune ordeal.

There are better places then that to mount turbos
I would say next to bell housing is the best place but the possibility to move ABS module you could front mount also

juggernaut1 03-27-2019 12:58 AM

The placement of the turbo back there would result in massive lag. My brothers twin turbo LS2 setup in his VZ Commodore has the turbos low down near the bell housing. Keeps the under bonnet temps under control too. My modified Nissan S15 ran a fairly decent setup. Built and sleeved motor, Full Race twin scroll / twin gate ex mani from the US and Hypertune intake, T/B fuel rail etc. Autronic management.

This is the setup on my brothers LS2......food for thought. Not perfect IMO but works well on the stock LS2.

Have the turbos sticking up thru the hood on each side, ha
