Ugh. Oil Filler Cap Broke

So, cold night, about to top off the oil and the cap broke in three like a cracker. One piece fill below, clear to the bottom.

I assume I can’t drive like this. Just put a rag and wrench on it to remove when I get a new cap? I clearly don’t want any plastic in there.

Did the other part fall inside the engine if it did then yes you dont want to drive with it in there But if i now read it another way,. is that the broken part from the filler cap fell in to the bottom of engine compartment .If this is right just try and put a cap of some sorts over the oil filler port but dont not sealit it of because it needs to breath .

Autozone has a $7 cap they say is compatible. Any reason not to purchase as a temporary measure until I can get one delivered? Does this breathe differently than any other cap?

If so, I'll just put an AMG sticker on it instead of spending $35-50 (on line v stealership)

The oil cap doesn’t “breathe” it’s a sealed unit. Cars run a pcv system instead of breathers and have since about 1970

The edge of the cap is sealed with a rubber o ring, there is no hole in the plastic to vent or allow the engine to breathe. Doing so would make the car fail every emissions certification test in existence

No holes... tested with water and ripped it apart. The holes you see in the one shot are only from the plastic I chiseled off the back.

If you had one with a hole, it was damaged.
