Differential Oil / Break-in Question!!

I read in the owners manual under the break-in instructions that they recommend the differential oil be changed after break at around 1,850 miles, and every 30kmiles or 3 years after that.

My questions is how many of you guys actually changed the differential oil at the 1,850 mile mark?

Thanks,

David

I did. I would assume you should do recommended services, especially on a new $80k car.

I just did my 1000 mile breakin and just starting to drive 80+mph but will not push it hard until I do the 1850mile diff oil change and maybe request to do an oil change. I would do the recommended maintenance

Uhh yeah, this is not optional. Why would you NOT do it.. Trying to save a couple hundred dollars on your $90k vehicle?

For the guys that did it, what is the cost of the diff oil change if you don't have the pre-paid service plan?

I reached out to my dealer about getting the 2-year pre-paid service plan and didn't really like the answer I got. The price on the website is listed as $1300 for the 2-year plan but it says dealer sets actual price. My dealer told me "It costs $1300; we don't discount pre-paid service or extended warranties."

The 2-year plan includes the diff oil at 2k, oil change at 10k and 20k, and brake fluid flush at 20k. It almost seems like paying as you go would be as cheap or cheaper?

Since there are at least five other MB dealers in the area, I'm going to call around and see if any are willing to do better than my dealer.

I found the prepaid service didn't save any money.

My mb dealership quoted me <$100 for the diff fluid change, but ended up doing it for free, so I can't confirm... Seems almost everyone pays around $169

Ok so for the record, I wasn't asking as if I wasn't planning on doing it. I was curious to see who followed that parameter as it seems the break-in procedure is followed differently by different owners. Some owners apparently disregard most of the guidelines regarding the RPM limit, speed limit, modes, ect.

I personally, am going to have it done right around 1,850 miles, no question.

Just wanted to see if anybody overlooked that part of the break-in recommendations.

Thanks for all the feed back.

I really think you can go over cause my friend leased one and ignored all recommended service and the c450 ran awesome with 24,000+ miles of pure abuse. I just like to follow and have on record so warranty will cover it.

I just got my rear diff oil changed at my dealer here in LA and it was $216 including tax. Sounds like I overpaid

Are people using Mobil 1? Is the spec for 140 or 90? Generally, mixing the two viscs for your climate, power level and driving style is ideal.

Say the capacity is 1.5q, you could use a full quart of one and half of the other. I would try the 90 and top it off with 140.

Mobil 1 is impossible to beat. AMSoil is good, but pretty pointless. Same for Redline.

Stay away from Lucas, for god's sake. Royal Purple too.

MB uses Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W-140. They put their part # A 001 989 52 03 10
on the Castrol bottle. A little hard to find. I purchased some from mboemparts.com
in the half liter bottles. Also bought the drain and fill plugs for the diff just to have spares.

Thanks, good to know.

Opie Oils has a lot of reference materials, and an excellent store front for European oils.

I'll look it over and report back.

I'm likely to go with a mix of Mobil 1, a full 140 topped off with 90.

I need to verify the capacity too.

Capacity is about 1.5 liters. There is a good thread elsewhere with clear and concise instructions for the diff oil change.
Check with MB about using "Non Approved" fluids. Sometimes they are a little sticky about warranty.

Thanks. I'm far out of warranty. It looks like it'll take the LS additive, which can be part of the formula or added later, or both. The Ford LS additive is supposed to be good.

I'll be back.
