Active sound module

Couple of q’s.
Why does the C63 not like the rear exhaust valves being unplugged at the back Box? Does this alone definetly put it in limp mode? I’ve Done this on my previous a45 and that was happy?
With all the uncertainty around the asr module and 2018 cars I’m thinking of trying the bypass connectors that are around £50 and keep it 100% open and apperntly fool the ecu. Will these have the same issue as the asr module on a 2018 car ?

Yes, you can use the O2 sims (ie AWE) to keep the valves open, but I would suspect it would be the same result as the ASR Module (as this is exactly what the ASR module does). I think if you have a 2018, you're just SOL.

Very odd. Kind of get the differnece between a 2007 bm and comparing the 2, but I had no issues on a 2016 a45 amg so surely someone must be able to say why a 2018 C63 doesnt like it.
Guess, as I’m a 2018 owner may take a punt on the sims and see where I get. Rather spend £50 to test it instead of £300. If it works ok can always add ASR to give full control.

On the cold startup, the car starts with valves fully open to warm up the cats faster. Then after a few minutes it will close 50 percent even with the button pushed. That is where ASR module helped. Are you saying your valves are fully open stock all the time on the 2018?

I checked this out when I had my ASR installed, engine warm, ASR valves wide open, ASR uninstalled valves wide open hence no difference in sound, that’s on my UK 2018 C63S estate.

They certainly were on mine with the PE activated when I checked a few months back, I returned the ASR module and got a refund because the only advantage it gave me was when starting the engine with it switched on the valves were fully open, you can do this anyway with the PE but it takes a couple of seconds so not much of an advantage.

ok i just went down to the garage with a gas mask and flash light and had my wife start the car with me behind the exhaust. my car is c63s built in 2018 with PE. The flaps was fully open when the button is pressed but does close about half way after engine has warmed up. So is the general consensus that the ASR does not work for 2018s or that it does work but doesnt sound any different?

Wish I used the gash mask though. My head kept spinning the entire day after breathing all that fumes in, haha.

Ok so I just tested this again on my 18 model. The exhaust flaps open fully when you are above 2500 rpm or if you just floor it. This pretty much means the ASR unit will only make your idle sound a bit louder and wont have much effect when you are driving in sports+ or race mode because you dont need to be driving very aggressively to go over 2500 rpm.

**** I didn't check what the valves looked like when it was idle sport + or race. but at this point I don't think the 400 dollars and risk of limp mode for louder idle is worth it.

I am using ASR for two months, without single issue. Car is definitely louder in comfort (its my daily) while cruising below 3k rpm and when you step on it its also louder. For the ease of installation and functionality I will definitely buy again

from what I have gathered so far 17 and lower models only open flaps fully at 4500 rpm so the ASR would give a pretty good boost in sound where as the 18+ opens much more liberally so the benefits for 18+ models are significantly reduced.

So with ASR exhaust flaps stay open all the time on a 2017? Does that mean the car sounds the same in all the driving modes? You can go back to stock and using the exhaust button with a push of a button?

Thanks for all the tests/ input re 2018. My cars bac today after 2 weeks at merc, so will do some tests and post my findings. I’ve just bought some by pass plugs ( so they stay open all the time) for £50 so will report back in these also once arrived.

Hi, no not really. Units received but the merc dealer messed up what they were supposed to be doing so my cars back with them, so not going to fit until they’ve sorted the bits. Probably be a week or so until the cars back and I can fit.
Loaners a brand new cls 53 so so could unplug these and test ! ( only joking). Nice car but could do with some extra noise. Dash is pretty awesome though!

Im not doing that in my 90k car lol but bypass plugs sound similar? Do you have a link to where you found them.
I want more on start up and idle, as I’m sure everyone in this 22 page topic agrees haha. My w204 with cat delete was nice haha.

To be honest I wouldn’t of bothered with these by passes and just unplugged the valves but earlier on in this thread it stated it may throw a fault code.
at least these will keep it tidy. £58 in the uk, but think others available in us, again mentioned previously in this thread.
