Ignition Coil Recall

So I guess there's a recall out now for at least some C63S cars for an ignition coil recall. My car went in for service a few days ago, and they said a recall for the replacement of the ignition coils shows as being issued late last week (2/23/18). I don't have the literature on the recall other than what's listed on my service ticket. My car is a '15 C63S sedan with a 5/15 build date. All I know is the service rep said the tech (her husband) had an absolute ***** of a time removing them (said he couldn't work them loose).

Through a search I saw where a similar recall on early C63S builds has been issued in the past in other countries (found some for both Canada and Taiwan). One of them listed it affected 1/15 - 11/15 build dates. Wonder if this is just a continuation of the same recall.

Dealer replaced mine due to misfiring. They said the new coils are an upgraded version.

I remember reading a while back that several people were having this issue. At the time I had an issue with vapor lock from running winter-blend fuel in warmer temps (>80F, typical TX winter) and before I realized that's what it was I thought I could be having the same ignition coil issue.

Funny thing is my car seems to idle better now that they've done the recall fix. It was never truly rough before, but it does feel smoother now. Could just be a placebo effect though.

Any way someone could look up the actual campaign for this? Just wondering if it was only a part replacement or if there was anything else they did with it? My service ticket has it listed as Campaign 2017060008.

What model years are affected by this recall?

Or is it just the 15s?

My MY16 doesn't show it's affected.

This is the current bulletin

There are references to making sure the coils are the new part # when troubleshooting other running issues on the new 4.0 engine cars. The current part # listed in the bulletin must be installed if there's an issue.

I just got word on this also. They estimate 1/2 day to do this! I'm like, really? It takes me less than 20 min to change 4 of these in a VW GTI.

vaelin 05-08-2018 02:15 PM

Well.. don't think your GTI had turbos sitting on top of the engine.

Good luck lol

Warranty time is 1.7-2.1 hours depending on model of car. Warranty time pays us less than what it actually takes, and if is not a tech who has done several of them before, it will take about double that.

OMG... they have to take the turbos out to get to it? What are the chances that they put everything back correctly???

No turbo removal, just bracketry and lines, but it's not like a 4 cyl with coils just sitting on top of the engine.

Just had my '16 in for a B service and they did the ignition coil recall on mine too. Never had any misfires that I know of.

Where did you run your VIN?

This normally shows recalls.

Resurrecting old thread because I have the same question. Where are the part# of the ignition coils printed?

StormHawk 06-30-2022 07:05 PM

How many ignition coils and how many spark plugs are in the vehicle, total?

Thank you. What is the easiest way to check the part number on the car? Is it accessible/visible?

I believe when you take them out it should be written right on the front of it
