Only a true fine wire mesh grille will be able to protect the coolers, even the update OEM still have holes that are way too big

And of course that is the whole problem. Do you think MB/AMG is stupid? If you put a fine mesh screen it will cut way too much air flow and over heat.
It's good air flow or good protection --pick one.

Fine wire mesh will NOT affect airflow in a meaningful way

Keep in mind even a not-so-fine mesh restricts air flow significantly.

22x12x2,5mm wire mesh has a free area of 58%
6x3x0,8mm wire mesh has a free area of 47%

That means two things:

a] Your air flow will be decreased and a significant pressure drop occurs (0-5mm from where you attach it is another part of equation on top of laminary/turbulent flow change after the mesh)
b] The air will not get exchanged while stopped and that is the bigger issue since your auxiliary fans will have to run at full speed for couple of minutes after each run when you turn off the engine

Been there, done that

Has anyone seen this Nomex Honeycomb product?

Used to protect radiators on speed cars from debris and mud.

Apparent has minimal air flow restriction.

Ok, work is now starting on the new custom heat exchangers.

A few pics showing what was found on inspection. You will be surprised...

Stones are projected through the air vent in the inner wheel arch guards into the rear of the heat exchangers

The rear of the heat exchangers are more heavily damaged than the fronts

Teaser, first side heat exchanger done.

I’ll post up a new thread for these when I have more time.

Nice. Are you replacing all coolers?
Keep us posted. I'd be more than interested in a set when completed/tested.

The 3 front facing heat exchangers are being done.

That's ridiculous. That has to be some paper thin aluminum. And then to have the audacity to push a ~$2,500 charge onto the customer to fix this. I'm having second thoughts about my car because of how common this problem is.

LMAO, this is unbelievable. I started up my car this morning and got a check coolant level warning. If I have a puncture I am going to be absolutely furious.

Most of the coolant warnings are just a few oz low as I have had 2 over the years and never see any leaks. Less than 6 oz in one of the tanks fixes it. sensors seem to be sensitive and oil warnings the same.

I think you're right. I got a chance to check the tank and it was around 6 ounces low. I checked all three coolers front and back and didn't see any signs of leaks. I stopped by the dealership and a friendly service tech topped the coolant off. In and out in about 2 minutes.

All of the issues people have had with punctures has definitely got me paranoid.

Perusing this thread when i noticed a leak out of my C63 that i suspected to be coolant.... and low and behold i have a pinpoint puncture on my radiator that is gonna cost me $2200 to get fixed.

Dealer is telling me to go through my insurance to get fixed (which... whatever)... but i'm worried that this will happen again. Anyone come up with definitive "fixes" for this? Anyone have any luck getting warranty to cover this?

Here is what I received from MB Germany

I write in response to your recent email communication which was received at our office on the 20th August 2018.

It was with regret I learned of the issue with your Mercedes AMG GT R's radiator. From the information in your email we believe this issue to have been caused as a result of an external influence which means the repair will not be considered under our Manufacturer’s Warranty or goodwill, with this in mind we are declining your request for a refund for the repairs which you have recently had completed.

I do hope you can accept our apologies for any disappointment caused as a result of this decision.

Freundliche Grüße nach Berlin

I wrote to AMG, and received no reply.

I too too had a pin hole a excessive damage to all front facing heat exchangers.

I chose to to upgrade rather than have this happen again.

Give Dru from ARE Cooling a call.
