Best scan tool??? C63S

Hi guys, some advice on best scan tool for my 2016 Mercedes C63S. I’ve had endless issues with fuel pump, it’s been replaced, fuel module computer replaced, and issue is every few weeks it just won’t start. I’ve had it in at Mercedes atleast 6 weeks the last 3 months. I called roadside the other day as it happened again and they couldn’t read the codes it was throwing but said their were a lot on there, cleared them and it’s good as new again. This is always the issue, clear codes and it’s fine for little while. What scan tool can I get powerful enough to not only read codes but clear them also, racq who cleared this week wasn’t a Star computer but just a cheapy. Thanks in advance...

Interested as well so I'm bumping this thread hoping for an answer.

I enquired with these guys: http://www.mbstartool.com/wholesale/sd-connect-compact-4-star-diagnosis-dell-d630-laptop.html and they told me $565 USD for the kit PLUS to clear a code like limp mode etc. on a C63s will also cost an additional $89 USD on top (every single time I need a code cleared with my own kit). So I was thinking what's the point getting the scan tool if it's still going to cost me each time I need something cleared

What a sh*t system. Might as well just go to an indi mechanic for $100 here in Sydney.

I purchased a Autel MAXIDAS DS808 @ $1000AU, but I use it every second day on all sorts of cars and it does everything I have asked of it so far, so it was worth every cent.
Something like this one might be more suited to what you want, plus you can use it on other makes and models It wont do the same as the one I have but it will read and clear your codes..
This one with 1 make of car, that is able to be updated with more manufacturers @ $10 ea
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Autel-Ma....c100008.m2219

Or this one with full makes and models

Yep, it has done everything I need it to do plus more, coded some keys to a BF Falcon ute and a Territory as well, paid for itself 10 times over already.

Pretty sure it will do what you need, I would suggest you do some of your own research on it before rushing out, I have not used it on a 2016 C63S, but have used it on many other Mercedes, also other cars, trucks and even used the OBD feature on a 2018 Kawasaki Ninja bike, I cant see why it wont as I have used it on cars up to 2019 so far with no problems.
You would need to check that it suits your purpose, some people swear by the Star, but I have a friend that has a star, From what I have done with the Autel so far it seems to do the same.

Might want to triple check first, $1000 a fair bit of coin to drop on a tool that may not be able to 100% wipe soft codes like limp mode etc.
From what I've read here, you actually need Xentry access and authorization code to be able to do those things, and that costs separately.

Hopefully someone with our car can chime in and confirm exactly what tool/s will work with a W/C205 C63S and can actually do everything

Just dropping a note here that I bought the Xentry kit aka Star Diagnostic tool, it does everything.. Clear any codes you want and a bunch of other awesome features like reset adaptions, fuel mix...and gazzilion other features. I would definitely recommend getting that instead of a generic system.

I have sorted all codes from a 2012 W204 accident damaged apart from hard codes in airbag module with my Autel, even Xentry cant do it you need to replace the module once airbags have detonated.
Have also used it to change instrument cluster, radio, ABS module, seatbelts, reset SRS steering angle sensor and reset after repairs were done on a W204 that was in limp mode, calibrated steering angle sensor, calibrated parking sensors, plus many more procedures that I was told only the star could do,

Generic Scan tools have come a long way and the ones that are in the upper scale in price can do 99% of what a dealer tool can do, I am yet to come across a problem that I cant do with mine, not saying that I wont, just I have not yet.
Bonus of the Autel is I am not limited to Mercedes, I can do the next door neighbours Kia too, my work ute, or my truck, its a good allrounder for $1000 AU

Doesn't Autel require yearly subscription though?

No
You get free updated for a year and then if you wish to update after that it costs you, you dont have to update, you can use it for as long as you like with no updates.
You will only need updates if you need to do newer cars that come out after your year expires.

Cool, thats a good price, i would think that if it has done what I have done with it so far, that it would do right up to a 2019 Mercedes

worked a treat. It wiped a lot more than the Xentry and no issues yet. Will post again in a week and two as that’s when it usually has issue occur after reset.

Great, Im sure it has its limitations on what it can do in a commercial situation, but for the home mechanic it will be more than you will ever use

That's excellent news man. Thanks for taking the plunge and trying it out. What did it wipe?

Clearing the codes is 1 thing, you may need to go into some of the control modules and calibrate them, I had similar results when I first scanned my W204, I just went through everything slowly and rectified what was wrong, you will find that some codes are there because something that is connected to it has codes, fix 1 thing but clear 10 codes at the same time, I can scan the car now and I dont get any fault codes at all.

Is there something special on Mercedes to scan for codes and all engine data via OBD2? I use a cheap ($100) scan tool which works with Android/iPHone wireless and used it in many different brand cars just fine. Just never bothered testing on my C63s as I never had an issue. That cheap tool does all I need, shows codes and relegated codes, can wipe them, can look at fuel data, O2 and other sensor data as chart just fine.

At the end of the day if what you have does what you need then that's all you need, but for an example, if you want to delve in further and re-calibrate your parking sensors, or adjust your steering angle sensor or a heap of other things I cant think of at the moment , you need a half decent scan tool, I only went for the Autel because it does all make of cars not just the 1, i want it for whatever I decide to buy next as well, never know I might buy a Ferrari next (not)
