Depreciation

This is my first Mercedes and curious about depreciation. I have owned my 15 C63S for about 3 months now. Purchased for around $43-44K with 41K miles. I went to get the car appraised just to see how much I was under (as all cars you will take a hit regardless with tax, title, fees, dealership cost, etc...). I had one appraisal at 30K and another at 34K. I have owned other vehicles such as an 18 M2 and 15 M3 (I have owned alot of cars), and neither of those have depreciated as quickly. The carfax on my C63S is clean.

Going on KBB, trade-in value shows at 34-38K and private at 38-40K at good condition (54% of cars).

Are those dealerships just low balling too hard?

I tend to switch out my cars every year (I get bored) and cannot lease based on my daily commutes, and does not make sense anymore to buy new like I did on my M2/M3.

I make additional principal payments each month (half of the monthly bill) so I imagined even with dealership low balling I would be in a good place with what I owe.

The only way you will EVER come close to getting any number you ask for will be through a private party. This forum is one of those venues. Carguru, Cars.com, Autotrader, Bring-a-trailer. And on and on. People sitting on the sidelines wanting what you have. And, they wait. You think it's getting too expensive to keep in maintenance or gas costs or you're kinda bored at this point. Or, it's becoming a pain to do the upkeep to keep it clean. Or, she's having your baby.... Ahhhh. You will feel you have a number in your mind. Someone else has their number. For these cars, it's through another person wanting what you're driving right now. You mod it, you will lose a percentage of that money. If you 'tune' it, you've shrunk your list of potential buyers cause you just voided the engine warranty for any future buyer. It will have to be a perfect match between the seller and the buyer. But here's another catch. Money... This is a very high-end car. Insurance the buyer will need to get might be pretty high based on demographics, age, record, etc. Another is how much a bank will loan on your car. If to a potential buyer can't get a full loan, they'll have to come up with hard cash. All of these things shrink your buyer pool.

Dealerships... my son is a finance director at a large dealership. Dealerships don't lose money on trades or sales. Buy low...sell high.

I like this car more than my M’s, which also includes an E90 M3 and a 335i.

This is more adult/low key. I don’t attract as many GTI’s or Q50’s on the highway while driving.

Well, as we all know most cars depreciate. If we all bought our cars based on the depreciation, none of us would probably own one of these. The buyer pool is small to begin with. Most people can neither afford this car, nor does it make sense to them. KBB is a pretty good source and looks like the dealership offered you the low end of the KBB value. That's not unsurprising. Generally you can get about median KBB value as a realistic value. Having said all that, the values don't drop that drastically over 3 months on a 5 year old car, even an AMG, unless there is a market adjustment. So more than depreciation being an issue here, you probably overpaid for the car in the first place. What sources did you use three months ago to see if the asking price is fair and reflective of the market at the time?

I looked at cars.com and autotrader. The price aligned with other comps, even those that were non S at the time. It was listed as a “good” price based off cars.com. There were no C63S or C63 listed at a “great” price when I was looking.

Ensure they were indeed S models. As an example, my primary ride is a Macan Turbo. There are five flavors: Macan, Macan S, Macan GTS, Macan Turbo and the Macan Turbo Performance Package. If you did a search, you'll find several stealerships state it has the Performance Package, but if you know what you're looking for it isn't.

So make sure it's really an S model and not a standard C63. Look for the S on the trunk.

It’s an S, shows up when you pull the VIN. Also had the decals at the time. I had a 981 cayman prior also.

It really depends on the area you live in and how many are around and the type of buyers and sellers . I'm in Vancouver and we have probably the highest percentage of luxury cars in N America or at least they tell us . Lots of exotics , lots of performance luxury cars . Most are leased , and those that own tend to be younger and asian and parents paid for them . When they change cars and trade them in the dealers really low ball them and they still take it because they aren't funding the cars the parents are so they aren't losing anything their parents are . The parents just want their kids to be happy and whatever it takes so the dealers just hammer them . I took mine in to trade on a 911 and mines a 2015 , looks like a 2019 , lots of mods and very low mileage and they offered $45,000 canadian and I laughed . There was no way , even the black book wholesale value for the lowest condition was higher so I walked . ......Its best to sell private

You’re in it for the long haul unless you want to take huge bath on trade in or try to sell it privately. It’s never worth what you paid for it and it will never increase in value.

The problem with private for higher end used cars is financing for private sales. Usually interest rates are much higher. This makes it hard to get great value unless they're paying cash, unlikely. Then you have all these tire kickers and test pilots. What a PITA.

Then the dealers, they burn you on the new one, burn you on your trade and burn you on accessories and junk you don't need or get cheaper elsewhere.

I got an extra $10k for my trade from my dealer from the initial offer and $16k off the E63S I bought. Did I lose money? Sure but no hassle. You just need to be a good negotiator. This hobby is ALL LOSS. I've lost tons of money between cars and motorcycles in my time but had fun doing it.
