C63 AMG S
New C63S AMG Owner

Hi All,

I’m a new owner to a C63S. Loving the car so far however find the rear abit wild.

Currently got Michelin PSS that need changing, what is the recommended tyre and also what size? I’ve heard people talk about increasing the rears etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

PS4S - seems to be a good recommendation here so I went for them. Work really well and a great balance on life, grip, fast warm-up and so on. Had the Dunlops before and I found them great when hot, but getting there was a bit of a problem. Swapping to the PS4S's made a world of difference. Now it grips a lot better in normal driving conditions and really like them. I am sold!

Also, get used to rolling into the throttle.... stamping on the throttle will force it to down change in auto mode and with cold tires, it will spin the rears. Roll into the throttle and let the torque build and its a lot more controllable. Or, use it in manual mode and just manage the gears / response from there. A little bit of an adjustment in your driving style and you will be really surprised in how quickly you can drive without breaking traction.

Finally, I find that the car does manage the traction pretty well. A little loss of traction is fine and with the e-LSD on the S does handle it well. Its engineered to be a little lose but controllable.

Thanks the response, yeah I noticed its not like my previous car which was an Audi RS3. Got to feather the throttle abit more than that! But its all good and exciting!

The front two tyres have abit of life left, i was thinking changing the rear two to M4PS’s. Would you recommend changing all 4 or will 2 be okay?

You should change all 4 tires. It is highly recommended to use same compound tire front and back.

Welcome to the exciting world of RWD. Yes, it's completely different from the RS3. The RS3 is effectively FWD, with the rear axle helping along when needed or the car thinks it helps. The Haldex system in the RS3 can never force more than 50% of the torque to the rear axle, though. With the C63 100% of the torque always goes to the rear wheels no matter what. It's a lot of fun, and unless you need winter traction it's frankly the best setup for a performance car. They are not the fastest from a dig compared to an AWD, but the driving dynamics are on a completely different level if your front wheels don't have to share grip between steering the car and propelling it forward. I came from the Audi world as well. Had several Audis over the last 13 years. My last one was a 2013 RS5, which has a properly rear biased AWD system, albeit still not enough to the rear in normal conditions, but it allowed for some limited drifting and sliding. Never was a fan of the Haldex system in the A3/TT platform, though.

Do you have a sedan or coupe/vert? The coupe/vert have more rubber in the rear and a wider track and different suspension/rear axle, so they manage traction a bit better than the sedan with its narrower track and tires. You can put wider tires even on the sedan if you want more rubber to keep you on the road, but as recommended above the PS4S has all the PSS offers, but much better. It offers the best overall wet and dry traction balance and IMO is the best every day street performance tire. There are other tires that offer more dry grip/performance, but generally they need to be warmed up and/or have reduced wet traction. I went from the stock PSS to the PS4S on my '19 coupe and the difference is very noticeable. For me the PSS was a step backwards, because I had put the PS4S on my RS5 before I sold it. Once you drive them back to back you don't wanna go back to the PSS, IMHO.

Haha thanks, I have had a E46 M3 in the past but 350bhp to 500 is a different level!

I have brought a 2016 Sedan, I read up on the coupe being better etc but I prefer and need the saloon for family life and yes family life in an AMG!

Currently the car has 265s at the back, I was told it might be better to upgrade to 285. Is that what you have?

Yes, 285s is what comes on the coupe. Some put 295s or even 305s on the coupe, but I don't find it necessary with the PS4S. I'm not sure what the widest tire is you can comfortably fit on the sedan w/o rubbing. Somebody with a sedan and wider tires is better qualified to answer that question.

Thanks buddy, appreciate the response. Have you got the facelift or pre-facelift?

285/30/19 is what im running on my sedan never had any rubbing even with 5 people and some baggage. The problem is that Michelin doesn't make 285 30 19 ps4s 😐. Currently im on pirelli's p zero which imo suck badly

Oh yes, there is that. The coupe optionally has a staggered setup with 19" front and 20" rear, so I have 285/30-20.

When you get the new tires installed, take the car to a good alignment shop. The way the toe is set up from Mercedes it tends to lead to rapid wear of the innermost edge of the tire. My front tires were showing the cords of the tire even though the rest of the tire was fine and would have had a lot of life left in then.
