Are NEW Caliper Bolts required when removing Calipers?

I read Caliper Bolts are Single Use and you should replace with a NEW Set if the Calipers are ever removed? Is this correct? Or is it OK to reuse the existing Bolts?

That is correct. Furthermore, there's a specific method of tightening, depending upon the bolt type. Normally it's a pre-torque, then another turn through so-many degrees of rotation. It is something you want to get correct, according to your car's VIN.

I appreciate it, but not sure I'd be able to do the specific method of tightening unless I can find that procedure somewhere. I likley will find the Torque Specs for the Bolts and that should be good enough, but appreciate the INFO!

I am asking because I am getting my Calipers PowderCoated and want to provide New Caliper Bolts and a Rebuild Kit to the place doing it. Sometimes you have to help people help themselves and make it easy for them to do it RIGHT unless you are at a Mercedes Place that knows their stuff....

Most bolts on the suspension and braking system as one time use .... at the dealership we always change them but then there are lots of guys out there that do not

Where did you read that from? 🤔

I've done the brakes three times since new on my C63s Coupe and have never changed the caliper bolts. No issues what so ever in 45,000 miles. Ever.

For what it's worth, I recently changed my rotors and pads and only the rear kit came with new caliper bolts. The front re-used the existing caliper bolts.

For the approx. $4-6 x2 bolts, I wouldn't risk it. Brakes are pretty fundamental safety items and these cars are heavy. Engineers spec'd the one-time use for a reason.

I have replaced the brakes on countless cars and never change the caliper bolts. But ... if the ones on this car are one time use bolts then yes you should, because after the 1st tighten/loosened, they will never hold the right torque again.

I agree with this statement. One time use bolts are generally "torque-to-yield" meaning the torque spec plus the additional rotation requirement permanently elongates the bolt. After this initial yield, the bolt will never be as strong as the first time use. This method is used in a bunch of different industries to guarantee a sufficient clamp load. If you are reusing the bolt, I would not do torque to yield again, as you will increase it's length again and further weaken it... which could be big trouble.

I'd personally get the new bolts, especially if you are upgrading something on the braking system and plan to add even MORE abuse than what the factory system came with.

WIS is the source for documentation that caliper bolts need to be “renewed” after removal.

2020 AMG C63S Coupe: Per WIS, it looks like the M12 bolts (2 below) are not torque-to-yield, however, the M14 bolts are. It looks to me like WIS indicates that the M12 bolts/screws should be removed for purposes of removing the calipers. That said, I plan to replace the M12s with new ones.

Did not know that! What else in the suspension is one time use? Or is this the only one
