Car Used for Joyrides During Service?

A couple recent times in the past I've received my car after servicing with more miles than when I dropped it off ( +100 miles once and currently +30 miles.) Both of these times my car was kept for nearly a week for a warranty service that should only require an hour or two to complete (the amount of time was explained because of a very busy service department.) When I questioned the dealership they said the invoice was correct in showing their mileage in and out the same or in one case where a test drive was required only a few miles added. I think the best thing to do next time is to get the service 'ambassador' to confirm the mileage at my time of arrival, not to put in an arrival mileage on the work invoice corresponding to the mileage when I pick up the car. Anyone else experience this? My paranoia?

No, I haven't made such an experience. I had my car in for service to take care of a few things and it was at the dealership for 3 weeks. Also had to go to the body shop in the next town for the side skirts. In all they put on 7 miles mostly for road tests to identify some creaks and rattles I wanted them to address and taking it to and from the body shop. Nothing unauthorized. I have a geo fence setup around the dealership, so I have a log of when the car leaves and comes back and get an alert every time, and then via the app I can see where it is at all times. If any questions come up I can show my SA the log and have them explain where they took the car. Take a picture of the mileage when you drop off the car if you have any doubts, and consider setting up a geo fence as well.

I have not experienced anything like this and all I have to say is it better be the most awesome driving experience they ever had... because when I get done with them...it will be their last.

I am not sure if older c63 has Mercedes Me connect, but on my 2020 model, it has feature that I can see in real time where my car is and last trip mileage/time.
So it helps me relieve any doubt I have when my car is not in my possession.

I don't believe I have these features on my 2018 pre-FL. I have a MB 'Companion' app which seems to be very limited in its features. From now on I'll be much more cautious - have the arrival mileage documented by the service advisor. I assumed a Mercedes Benz dealership wouldn't play these tricks. For the record several years back at a Land Rover dealership I brought my LR Evoque in for minor accident repair. Gas tank was just off full. No welding or serious repair, just a new front fender, paint and grille replacement. Picked it up 2 wks later gas tank was carelessly left with empty light alert. Go figure. When asking the service manager about this it resulted in an angry in your face defensive result. This kind of thing may be more common than we know. In the dealership's herd of cars in for service at any one time most are very average. The AMG C63s is eye candy

Get a dash cam it will record everything. I have a dual dash cam that has an front cam and a rear cabin cam. I have videos from when my car was in for a oil change and this service dude was reving my car in Sport + and saying "i need this in my life" 😅

Yes, you have many of the same features. On the PFL models the system is called mbrace and you need to download the Mercedes Me app. For 2019+ it's a new app called Mercedes Me Connect. The companion app is something else.

Well said brother 👊

OP I haven't experienced this with Mercedes. An extra 100 miles is way too much for test drives etc.
Sounds like the apprentices might have been driving it around and showing off mate. Who knows. Next time get keep an eye on the mileage and ask them for an explanation.

Such cases are not unheard of, so do invest in a dashcam! People like those are the worst

You can write your mileage on a Post-It and put it on the dashboard. This is what I use to do, you bet it only had <5 mi.

4 months ago. In for warranty service. Obviously leaking coolant bottle cap, some kind of reflash and that's all. 78 km of driving. Just under 1/2 tank of fuel used. Car returned with the dash flashing red and the gps prompting me to find a gas station ( I didn't even know the dash went red when you ran it down that low, because I've never run that low)

Work order says in/out 3km. Dash cam unplugged, all trip meters reset.

When questioned the service manager responded "We could not find the leak so extra driving on a (google maps shows ) 30km loop. When asked why it was done 2x he didn't respond. Asked about the dashcam. "we unplug all electrical devices during a reflash" Radio station changed from talk to top 40 and was loud enough to distract or drown out any diagnostic listening one could have been doing.

I argued that in 25yrs repairing cars I've never needed 78km and 1/2 tank of gas (however small the tank is) to diagnose a leaking coolant bottle. They did replace the cap, but from 10 ft away you could see the dried up coolant streaking down from the expansion tank cap. He also mentioned they had to warm the car up so it idled a long time which uses gas...🙄

When questioned why was the camera not plugged back in, they just shrugged it off. When asked why they reset all my trip meters, he couldn't answer that either.

As a technician I love dashcams, I leave them on. If anything goes wrong on a test drive, it's proof I wasn't screwing around or speeding.

They also had my car for 5 business days.

I didn't want anyone to lose their job, I just wanted someone to be accountable, and apologize.

It was a terrible experience.

When MB contacted me with a survey on the experience, I graded them accordingly.

Everyone who reads this post and the experiences of Jeremyf0923 and RyanL should be cautious about this happening to their cars. Just a couple incidents that aren't directly related to my story. Years ago at the same Mercedes dealership, my boss dropped off his Mercedes for service. Car was missing (stolen) when he returned to pick it up, Found several weeks later abandoned, crashed into a ditch. I have a neighbor who owns an independent foreign car repair shop. His weekend rides are sometimes his customer's cars. Most currently a BMW M3 and a Aston Martin Vantage. Road tests or joy rides? He has a long list of business practice complaints against him. I think this kind of thing goes on more than we realize. Of the two recent times I've been suspicious of my car I dropped it off for very simple repairs, a switch replacement (part at dealer) and a wheel alignment. In both cases the car arrived for the services on a Monday morning and was ready on that Friday. These are my suspicions - I hope they are not base on fact.

My wife has hers programmed to prevent this. Also, mileage is documented on the service sheet when you pull in. If that happened to hers, I don’t want to be close by. I don’t want any blood spray on my clothes...

I have never heard of this down here and I have had 5 MB cars

There are insurance issues for the dealer so this would never be sanctioned at dealer principal level.

Took my car for the A service, after it was finished and since my SA was busy one of the valets pulled in my car in Sport+ revving the engine. I asked him wtf and went straight to the manager. That valet dude got fired on the spot and I don't even feel sorry for him, who knows what could have happen next time in someone else's car. This is also a huge liability for a dealer, they don't want this unnecessary headache.

Funny story (sort of)
I have blackvue front and rear dashcams, and use the external power packs, (I have 2) so I get about 48 hours or recording if the car has not been running..

I log into my MBRACE account, since my blackvue's are offline , and without thinking (it was like 10pm) I am like, screw it, I can remote start my car, and then my cams will come on..

Set every alarm off in the dealership, and goes knows what else..

On the topic of dealer joyrides.. I never (noticed) an issue. I have had a time in my G63, that the mechanic needed to drive it for longer times to make sure the issue was resolved, and they asked if he could take it home etc.. The tech is the only AMG tech I have ever let touch my G , so I was ok with it.. (but they of course called to confirm, etc etc)
