What Trickle charger

I bought it for my previous car before I went to Europe for 2 months to pick up my C63S. Kinda realized last minute that I should probably put it on a trickle charger for that long. The charger has come in handy during the pandemic to keep the batteries charged in both of our cars.

Hi Superswiss
Loved your answer on this and hope you can help me a little more. I've a 2019 C63S AMG. Needing to buy a trickle charger, I'm in Europe. You mention AMG compatible chargers. How do I know what chargers are AMG compatible? I'm not seeing this on buying options.
Cheers

AGM, not AMG. AGM is a type of battery. Most trickle chargers today can charge AGM batteries. I actually just upgraded my trickle charger to the one below, because my old one kept telling me my battery was bad and this one has an automatic repair program. It charged the battery without any issues and it also shows voltage and charging level on its display, so I actually know the state of the battery. These guys used to resell the OEM CTEK charger w/o the Mercedes logo, but now have their own. It's quite fast, too. I've been having some weird electrical issues and I think it was because the battery was low. When I hooked it up earlier this week it said my battery was at 20% and only had 11.6V. It's now fully charged and I'm keeping an eye on it to see if the issues went away.

BTW, some newer cars now have lithium 12V batteries. Juice My Ride charges extra for the lithium mode. I didn't order it, but the charger they sent me actually has the lithium mode, so I'm prepared for future cars that may have a lithium battery.

FYI...the cigarette lighter adapter doesn't work in the C63 and most MBs, because those turn off when the car is turned off. I think the GT has one in the trunk for charging that stays on.

This one is available in Europe, along with the necessary plug and voltage. They have locations in the US and UK. You just have to pay for shipping outside of the US and UK.

The NOCO Genius charger is also very good and typically available via Amazon. I have a NOCO Genius10 which has modes for lead-acid, AGM and Lithium batteries. In addition, it has a "repair" mode and a "power supply" mode.

I've used the power supply mode to recover when I accidentally ran my GTR's Lithium battery down to "nothing" ... i.e., where it went into its protection mode and wouldn't respond to either the regular charging or the repair mode on the NOCO or on the car's supplied charger. By connecting the NOCO in power supply mode for about 5 minutes, (I'm guessing that) it brought the charge up to a level where the car's low-battery protection mode was deactivated so it could respond to regular charging <whew>, so that feature is nice to have. The power supply mode is also useful for bench testing auto electronics, if you're ever into that mode.

You only need one M10 nut, and for ground just use one of the accessory grounds that already have a couple of other wires on them already, with its own nut already there... The positive terminal is protected by the plastic bonnet on the positive terminal in the engine compartment. I ran the plug to come out discretely from the back of the hood and it folds out of the way neatly, is basically not visible and is sealed with a protective cap. It's so easy to hook up the smart charger now, no popping the hood, etc.. Just flip the cap, and plug in - done in 5 secs.

Hey I'm trying to figure out how you connected the positive terminal for the eyelets kit to the terminal point in the hood. Do you have a picture of that connection by any chance?

Hey ChargedMB! Did you figure this out yet? I’m about to collect my car and am wondering the same thing…

Hey man! I ended up just hooking the trickle charger directly using the clamps instead, I folded the battery cover flat back (thought it would break off, but its actually not that fragile lol) and then made the clamps as flat as possible. The positive terminal is still like 15-30* angled, but that is good enough to close the hood to the first hinge point.

It's not as great as a quick plug and play, but for a noninvasive solution it isn't bad as it takes 2 seconds to setup/remove.

If you are using the Mercedes trickle charger, always remember there is an order of operations to get it going. Setup: positive terminal clamp first, negative clamp second, then plug into the wall. To remove, do the reverse: unplug from the wall, then negative and then positive. Below is a picture from the manual for jumping, so its instructions are slightly different. But the picture shows the nub where I clamp the negative terminal.

Ah I see, it's true it's not that bad haha, especially if you aren't going to be charging every single day. I suppose you don't close the hood fully in this case, then?

Thanks for letting me know, and thanks for the tip about the order of operations as well! I will be sure to give the manual a read through before I need to do this heh. Wish me luck!

Anytime man, you close it to the first latch position. The second position is completely closed. It will make more sense when you gentle drop it down haha.
Major congrats and best of luck brother!
