What are you looking for on the transmission side? Reliability? No known issues, either, but the transmission depends on whether you get a PFL (2018 and older) or a FL (2019+). The PFL has the older 7 speed MCT and the FL got the new 9 speed MCT. The latter is significantly better. Has shorter gearing in the lower gears for faster acceleration and is overall much more responsive, especially in manual mode. Comfort mode is now usable, because it always starts off in 1st gear as opposed to 2nd gear in case of the old 7 speed. The 7 speed often felt like there was a disconnect between the paddles and the transmission executing the shift, and it wasn't as responsive. Not too bad in Race mode, but other modes seemed laggy. The 9 speed bangs off the shifts on command and is one of the major improvements in the FL over the PFL, IMO.

Anyone know why Mercedes chose the 7-speed over 9-speed on the Black Series models?

Which Black Series models? The only Black Series that came after the 9-speed is the GT Black Series, and the GT uses a transaxle with a 7-speed dual clutch and electronic locking differential all in one unit, and not the MCT transmission.

Yes, that model. Chose the 7 speed DCT
instead if the 9 speed MCT. I’m assuming because the 7 speed is strong unit.

Yes, as I said, completely different architecture. The GT has the transmission on the rear axle for weight distribution. The MCT is mounted forward right after the engine. Wouldn't work with the GT's torque tube. The C63 and all other AMGs don't use a torque tube. The MCT being a planetary gear train at the heart is too long to be suitable for a rear transaxle. The GT's transaxle is basically an improved version of the SLS unit.

I am a PFL and something I really feel like I missed on is the 9 stage traction control in the FL. I find the PFL sport mode far too restrictive still. TC full on is completely useless....,and full off.... you've gotta really be on top of things or you'll be calling the insurance company.

Some details to that statement? I have not heard or read about that a simple stage 2 caused any issue.

I can’t speak to reliability as my car is less than a year old, but I have the 9 speed and it’s a beautiful transmission. Very smooth and responsive in auto, fast in manual. I have driven but not owned the pre FL cars, owned a late W204 and this transmission is in a different league!
