Cleaning leaves and dirt from under the hood
While I was cleaning up the dirt, leaves and twigs from under the hood I noticed a grate looking thing. I looked inside and saw water pooling inside. So I brought it in to do the belt tensioner, pulley etc.. and I asked about it and the mechanic said it would take a few additional hours to do. As usual I took a picture to show and ask ou guys about your thoughts on it. Also I don't know what the rubber seals around the trunk are called.

you should be able to clean that out by using a long thin screwdriver, straightened coat hanger, or the such and unclogging the drain hole under the grate inside the compartment. if i remember the drain is in the left front side. once you dislodge the dirt try putting a little water in and see if it drains. now if water got down into the carpet and into the electronics you could be talking 2 hours.

Water pooling in that grated reservoir is what causes thousands of dollars of water damage to these cars , it was subject of a class action but it's now too late to make a claim

you can unclog it in 5 seconds using a long screwdriver or chopstick . Always check that it's unclogged

Success! Tusabes, thank you fine sir. Now what can I do to dry the carpet? i was thinking of a hair dryer but I don't think it'll dry it all the way. It's still not warm in NYC yet so open windows won't help.
also the drain is cleared but there's still a little mud inside. I tried flushing it out with a gallon of water but it's still not fully cleared. Is there a way to open it?

A hair dryer won't work , there is about two inches of thick foam under the carpet that is likely completely soaked
you can pull up the front passenger side carpet starting from under the dash , then blow a hair dryer under the carpet to the rear
but to do it right you should really remove the passenger seat so the front and rear carpet can be removed
as you can see from these pics there is indentation in the floor floor where the wiring (and water ) runs straight to the rear
Sam. If you don't get out all the water more components will be damaged when power is applied

Had this happen to our R350. The blower motor first was acting up then went out. Replaced that. Then the car was acting like it was possessed!! Wiper turning on, lights flickering...all kinds of bad!
Water was pouring into the cabin because this reed valve at the bottom was plugged with sticks and leaves. Cost me $2500 to replace a buss bar under the floorboard on pass side.
MB knows about it but forget about it being a "design flaw".
Either clean it out twice a year, remove the reed or drill a few "relief holes" on the side so it drains there before your interior.
