It's not wear and tear, trust me.
I do it manually on the X5 every time. It's automatic on the LS430.
Sometimes I just fold them in and out on both cars for the heck of it. I wish the other Benzo's would do it automatically, or even have a manual button for them.

When I had the automatic ones in my 04 w211 you could reprogram them in the instrument cluster. Look under settings > convernience I beleive and it will say like auto close mirrors with lock and just change it to the - sign.

It is under the menu you can change it with the steering wheel controls. But its not wear and tear, I think if you use it once in a blue moon its more likely to break as mechanicals that never get used tend to bind.

Sometimes when I walk away from the car, I can't remember if I locked it. If the mirrors are folded in, I know I locked the car...and yes, you can turn it off in the setting/convenience menu.
