I'd say $2,000 a year is a lot to spend on insurance. You can get quite a bit done at a local indy based on that budget. More importantly you should determine what big ticket items have been replaced, such as coils, motor mounts, tranny mounts, and ABC components. Spend the $200 (if you didn't when you bought the car) and have everything assessed at the dealer. You can also find out what repairs were done in the past at the same time. Being the cars are close to 10 yrs old, by now most of the faulty parts have been updated and replaced regardless of the miles. Unless your ABC hasn't been touched I'd consider it, otherwise I'd bank the money for when you need it. Keep it seperate from your "modding" money or it may not be there when you need it!!

Also consider how long it may take to put on the first 1,000 miles....if its a seasonal garage queen it could mean an entire yr of payments before the warranty can be used.

If it covers ABC and all components, motor mounts, as well as coil packs, I say do it. I spent a hell of a lot more than that in 30,000 of driving. You may be able to find a better price but, if it is a very reputable company that will pay, it's worth the cost.

Thanks for the comments. I'm having the ABC pump replaced next week ($2,500) and I've already installed new coils as preventive maintenance prior to installing a tune. It definitely would have paid off if I'd purchased the warranty the week I bought the car. Now though, with some of the big items replaced, it may not be worth it at almost 6 grand. If I could find a reputable 3-year warranty for 4 grand, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

have you looked into rebuilding the pump, or getting a rebuilt one?

I've researched every possibility and based on my research and other's advice, you've got to go new if you're paying to have the pump installed. I'd only risk rebuilding or buying a $300 AutoZone rebuilt pump if I was doing the install myself.

Okay, it appears I lied earlier when I said I'd buy a warranty if it was 3 years for 4K. I just got a quote from one of my credit unions (ACU) for a Route66 warranty. It's 3 years, 36K miles for only $1,423. Before you get excited, check out the limited coverage:

okay, i agree about the pump, but just to let you know, the dealer installed a brand new abc pump 15,000 miles (2 years) ago because it was leaking. well, last week they installed another brand new abc pump because that too was leaking. luckily all covered under my warranty. good luck. what is it costing you to install the pump?

I would still get the warranty. I went through a couple of pumps in less than a year. Every time you blow a hose, it will take out the pump unless you immediately stop the car. If you have a good warranty, you can continue to drive the car to your destination instead of being stuck by the side of the road.

What is the name of the first company? Any big difference in price if the car is currently under warranty? I guess I'm curious for obvious reasons....

$1,440 Pump and $1,100 install (with flush, fluid, rodeo, etc)

It's going to kill me to pull the trigger, but I'll likely end up with the first option.

Sorry, I can't help with the second question. The first warranty I listed is from CarChex. They are the top rated auto warranty on TopComsumerReviews: http://www.topconsumerreviews.com/auto-warranty/

Just make sure they cover all the ABC components and hoses.

The wife is not happy! I broached the subject of the 6K warranty and she called the 65 some very choice words. Very mean indeed. In her defense, she doesn't drink but had just consumed her limit for the night, a single Angry Orchards Hard Cider.

Here's the breakdown of money spent so far:

- Blowout on drive home from purchasing - $600 in new tire and wheel repairs.
- Replaced front acceleration sensors myself damaged due to excessive G's from the potholes: $80
- ABC pump failure 4 months after purchase - $2,500

I decided to go with a differnt warranty than I'd posted. I chose USAA as it seems to cover everything. The coverage is 12 months 12K for $3,396, or 6 months at $565. It's not a daily for me, so the mileage isn't a concern. I think the weak parts are going to fail in the first year, so if that's the case I'm covered.

Trigger is pulled, and now I can drive the beast with some peace of mind.

A fellow CL600 owner made the decision pretty easy for me: https://mbworld.org/forums/mercedes-...-warranty.html

The USAA plan is very good but your plan is expensive with a very short coverage period.

I tend to avoid warranties, even for this sort of car. Warranties are only there to make money for warranty companies, so what they provide is assurance against large bills. In the long run, you don't make money out of a warranty; they do.

In the case of our cars, we have a pretty good idea of what goes wrong and how to deal with it. In addition to a long list of consumables that warranties don't cover, we just KNOW that every car will need two ignition coil packs, an ABC pump and a few hoses at some point in its life. Those are quite big bills, but not really the sort of things that warranties are meant to provide insurance / assurance against (unaffordable major mechanical failures)

The amount you spend on those parts can be paid for by the cost of the warranty.

I agree, but I've checked with around a dozen different companies and that's the best I could find for the money. I could have went with 5K for 2 years or 6K for 3 years, but I really didn't want to pony up that much for a warranty.

You could have went with the 3 yr plan with CARCHEX and paid monthly for 24 months. If after the 1st yr you didn't want to continue, you could stop payments and walk away from it if you felt you weren't getting the coverage or needed it anymore. If you found it had value, you could continue paying the 2nd year for a total of 3 yrs coverage. Now you will pay more FOR one year of USAA than you would IN one year for the 3yr policy... Just food for thought if you haven't actually pulled the trigger.

Now that's a very good idea. I hadn't really considered the fact that I could just cancel it at some point, making the policy a shorter term. Are you still considering them for yourself?

I'm kicking around the idea. I think its important to find out who accepts the warranty. With any company, are the dealers looking to work at the rates they offer to payout? Some companies can be a real hassle to deal with.

Good points.
In hind sight, I would have gladly paid $6k for 3 years coverage. How many miles are you covered over the 3 year plan?

The 3 year plan is 30K miles. It's the first plan listed in the thread. Rich has made some good points, and I think I'll go with Carchex as a result. If they fail to meet expectations; I'll cancel the warranty.

I don't blame you for paying more for USAA. It's the best on the market but they are damn proud of their rates. I'm about to do an overhaul on my total insurance spend and will probably dump them and save a bunch of money. Their rates were competitive on home and auto 5 to 10 years ago but have gone up too fast to be competitive now.

get the 24 month plan.
File a claim to see their service, if they deny repairs then dont make the payments anymore
