Any idea what it does? And whether it matters if you flash anyway to a 3rd party tune?

It sounds like you hopped on a 600?

Yes I did .. what beast ! Just going through what I remember reading before , I know I have read many posts regarding the famous coil packs ... one of the things I remember reading was a bulletin by MB stating that to deal with some misfire complaints , a flash or update of the software , maybe firmware of the ECU must be done by MB

Misfire Complaints
If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of misfire complaints, please check basic systems, read and analyze freeze frame data etc., perform diagnostic steps as outlined in "V12 Engine Complaints Diagnostic Tree" in STAR TekInfo (EDAC) and repair as necessary (in case of warranty use appropriate operation codes and time from Time Guide).
If a fault was diagnosed and a repair was performed as per the above, confirm if the condition was corrected. If the condition still exists, proceed as follows.
1. Check charge air coolant pump for function (i.e. current draw) and ensure there is no air in the system.
2. Perform repair as necessary.
3. Bleed charge air coolant system circuit.
4. Confirm if condition was corrected or changed.
Note:
Check current draw as described in DAS --> List of possible tests --> Check component M44 (charge air cooler circulation pump) --> Test current consumption of component M44 (charge air cooler circulation pump).

If all the above has been checked and a misfire on cylinder 3 (P2046), 4 (P2049), 9 (P204C) and 10 (P204F) together with P2043 only (no other misfire codes) is still present, proceed as follows.
1. Check the part number of the boost pressure control valve and replace if needed. (If the part number is A275 153 00 59 it must be replaced)
2. Flash the ME control unit to the latest level of software and perform SCN coding.

THis is what I found so far , but I remember a member posting the actual PDF sent from MB to their dealers or techs ..
