You can use VHT Nite-Shades. It applies similar to paint, but to make it look good you have to take as much care as if you were painting a car. Unless you have experience with automotive paint, I'd recommend finding some junkyard pieces to practice on first. You can also mix black paint with clearcoat, which can make it easier to get an even color but you have to know how much to mix to get the color you want. Regardless of what you use (Nite-Shades or mixing clear with black), you should expect to apply several coats, then wet sand and polish to get a smooth finish.
Honestly, I've never seen a DIY job from someone who didn't have experience working with automotive paint that looked good. I'd recommend sending them to Flip's Custom Tails. I've seen his work in some of the other communities I belong to, and you definitely won't be disappointed.
