I like the not too bothersome sound. At idle and light cruising, it's like stock. Which is just how I had hoped it would turn out. Hit the gas, and you can hear it means business. Sweet.

Also, I'll need to get some full throttle vids, this one was done late in the evening so I didn't want to be racing around the residential neighborhood, and didn't feel like going out to try to find a deserted place.. I only was pressing about half throttle in the acceleration clips. But I will eventually get some better vids up..

I wouldn't trust Midas to go anywhere near my car, not even if they paid me.

But besides that, I agree that resonator delete was one of my favorite mods

Just had mine pulled earlier this week by A&A Muffler Service in Poway. It sounds great. They're a bunch of car guys there and were just as excited about the new sound as I was.

looks good. the only comment I have is that only the up exhaust side should be on the outside. the down portion (closest to the tips) should be run inside the OEM exhaust. its not just about keeping the same size, but allowing less turbulent air. the more turbulance the more backpressure. you only need so much backpressure. looks and sounds good!

Hang on, anyone comment on the sound when you:

1) delete mufflers only
2) delete both resonator only
3) delete both muffler and resonator

Would be interested to hear from the perspective of a V12TT owner if possible

Tell them to cut out the resonators and replace the section with a peice of straight pipe. The muffler shop I used had it done in 30 minutes and charged me $70.

Is this the right part to bring to Midas if I want to do "X pipe" rather than straight pipe given I end up deciding to remove both resonators instead of just the one side? Would Midas have these laying around for close to the same price point?

Also I see the OP has a CL55, I have a '08 CL63, are the two exhaust systems identical enough that the procedure is just as straightforward on both respective cars and the techniques being the same (resonators in the same areas, etc)? Also I see some people recommending removing both resonators and others doing just one side with a straight pipe. Could someone expand on the difference in the two different techniques in terms of sound and whether in California there could be a difference in passing an emissions test. My car needs a smog cert every two years.

Please provide crisp answers so when I go to Midas or wherever, I gan give them exact instructions leaving nothing to chance because I know nothing about the topic. I will be parroting exactly what you guys tell me.

I can't really help you there. Like the original poster, I also have a CL55. Different motor, different exhaust system. What I can tell you is that you don't install an x-pipe where the resonators used to go. The exhaust pipes are a couple feet apart at the section where the resonators go from what I remember. A resonator delete will not cause any issues with passing smog. A cat delete will and is illegal here. I live in Ca. and so does the OP.

I would suggest that you go to a custom exhaust shop shop and talk to them about what you want. Get the car up on a lift and look at the exhaust. The reason people use x-pipes is usually because they remove the 3rd cat which essentially functions as a merger point for the exhaust gasses on a stock system. At leas that's how the CL55 is setup.

my car had two resonators. On for the left and one for the right. I pulled them both and left the stock mufflers in place. My car is supercharged, but I've known some turbo guys to remove the mufflers as well.

What part of Ca are you in?

both refused to do the job stating it is illegal.


I knew it was illegal to remove the cats but why is it illegal in Cali to remove something that only pertains to sound?

Most of the AMG's I run with here in SoCal have done it. As recently as last week on a C63. Did you try an independent shop or were they franchises?
