Killer Chiller

I'm making slow and deliberate progress on the install, as I'm trying to keep it a clean. Also, I received the wrong size MB clamps, so worm clamps will be used on some of the liquid lines.

I'm posting my own diagram, as one wasn't included. Also, I'm hoping the right rear line I tapped into is the cold line from the heat exchanger, or I'll be doing some rework.

Here's where I'm locating the actual unit. I believe this is the cabin air inlet. I got the idea for mounting it in this location from watching a forum member's CL55 install on youtube.

Killer Chiller-20140615_152206_zps7iv0bic0.jpg

Had to trim out the baffle to make room for the unit:

Test fitting the unit:

Killer Chiller-20140615_152243_zpsijlmbtqk.jpg

Hopefully this is the cold line from the HE:

The green hose isn't from your garden, it's Gates HD silicone heater hose. The cheap stuff was flattening out on bends, so I had to spring for the good stuff.

Killer Chiller-20140617_201211_zps659d3b5a.jpg

And here's the diagram. The solenoid is closed by default, which kills cooling in the cabin. As a result, I will install a switch delivering 12V when the ignition is on. I'll kill power to the solenoid at the track.

I'll post more photos later of the suction and liquid lines as well as the solenoid "race valve", switch, etc.

Here's the contact info for a KC if anyone is in the market:

Nice. Where did you get the KC & how much did it cost?

Sorry, but I'm still in the process of installing it, so I can't comment on that just yet. However, from what I've read and seen it doesn't. Search youtube for "CL55 Killer Chiller" if you want to see a forum member's input on the matter.

looks nice. are you going to be adding a rear tank and getting rid of the heat exchangers?

I think the best scenario for me is to use the existing heat exchanger as my reservoir by blocking off the front of it, preventing air from warming the water. I might even insulate it. Then, in the winter, I'll just unwrap it and cut flow to the KC.

Moreover, I think it's best to keep the HE connected incase the AC loses pressure. Therefore I'm not potentially driving home with no charged-air cooling.

Nice, thanks for the info. I've been thinking about my I/C system and trying to decide which way to go. I am leaning more toward doing the KC setup as I think it would be the best for around town/daily driving, I'm just not sure how well it will work for drag racing.

looks good anthony. any worries about blocking the fresh cabin air? can't wait to see 50* temps in 100* weather!

IMHO, the only thing more incidious than water is air. I'm sure it will find it's way.

Two wires to go. I've now got to find a switched 12v source and ground - easy peasy. I've bleed the system, and test driven the car, so the intercooler pump seems to be funtioning fine (no air in the system is suspected at this point). Also, there doesn't seem to be any leaks in the intercooler system, which is nice.

Tomorrow my wife will have the AC system inspected for leaks and charged. If there are no leaks and it holds the coolant, I'll start insulating the lines. Progress is slow, but the end result should be worth it.

Here's a video showing where I installed the switch. Flow of AC coolant to the cabin is restricted once the switch is off.

This video shows me burping the intercoolers.

maybe put a clamp over the hose to smooth out the kink.

Good idea. The only one I know of that has a bit of a kink to it is the one from the KC to the intercooler piping. I plan on keeping an eye on it, and I might try a clamp if it gets any worse.

Tech called and the AC won't come on due to the "AC OFF" light, but at least there were no leaks. Hopefully it's just a result of the refrigerant being low. If not, I'll hook up DAS when I get home and check the Compressor fuse and relay. He said he should still be able to get the refrigerant loaded.

The video below worked like a champ in getting the AC up and running. Now I've got to get the KC working properly. Time to start the diagnostics.

Nice find. That is a lot quicker than using the STAR DAS. I'll have to remember that one when I get my KC.

I just spoke to Joe and found out the shop can't properly load the refrigerant unless the compressor is running. So Matt, make sure you clear the codes before they start charging the system with refrigerant. I suppose they would load a can or two and then you'd clear the code. Next step would be to power up the AC and let them finish the job. There has to be sufficient pressure in the system or the compressor will not turn on. This is evident by the red "AC Off" light that won't shut off.

OK, thanks. I'm not doing it until this winter anyway But I'll just hang out at the shop whiule they do it and have my STAR with me just in case. I need to contact Jeff and find out if it will cause a problem when I'm driving in sub zero temps before I decide to go with it for sure.

Are you going to be able to post a vid like the YOU tube one so we can see how well it works on your car?

I will post up as the install and tweaking progresses. Currently it isn't cooling squat, but i's not the KC's fault -- the car is likely low on refrigerant.

As for the winter, I'll remove the cover from the heat exchanger and not run the air conditioning. This should take care of that.
