CL's vibrating like crazy!

Here's the deal. Whe I'm driving on the highway around 70-80 MPH, the car vibrates like crazy. The crazy part is, 30 seconds later it's as smooth as silk. But wait, give it 30 more seconds and my teeth are chattering again. It cycles this way like clockwork.

What do you guys think? Wheel bearing??

Also, you know that clicking noise you hear when your lug bolts are a little to long? I'm hearing that on the right side of the car with factory lug bolts, so what do you think? More evidence of a bad bearing???

I've already balance the wheels, twice, so it's not them. Also, wheel vibration wouldn't be intermittent and cycle like it does.

Wheel bearings usually make a wawawa sound, not clicking. Have you checked your driveshaft flex discs? After jacking the car up and trying to shake each wheel to check for bad bearings I would look close at those as well as CV joints.

I'll take a look at the flex discs tonight. The CJ joints looked good but I didn't try shaking the wheels, only turning them. I'll give them a shake.

You sound pretty certain. Care to elaborate?

The suspect tire is new and so is my spare. Both are the same brand and size. If I have time tonight I'll install the spare up front and see if the vibration disappears.

I had the same issue with Brand new Ventus V12's, on the hgwy around 65-75 mph it would shake and after 1 minutes it would almost stop for about a minute and start shaking again I took it for a balance check the wheels and tires were NEW so it checked out but after I took it to a shop that has a RoadForce machine they found out that I not only had 1 but 2 bad tires (factory defect) they were of course covered by warranty and the new set was perfect.
Not saying that's your issues but it sounds pretty similar to the problem I had

That makes sense, as I really didn't notice the vibration until after I installed a new front tire.

I have a similar vibration only at a certain speed that goes away when I speed up, but in my case it's a bent rim. The shop that balanced my tires didn't tell me they were bent, wait for it, …. because they balanced. Something is out of round on your car and it sounds like a tire.

That happened to me. Due to the vibration I went to Discount Tire to have them balance the wheels/tires. After I paid and they brought my car out they informed me that two rims were bent. Afterwards I had a shop repair them both, but I'm still in the same vibration boat.

I found a local tire shop a 1/4 mile from my work that does road-force balancing for $10 a tire, so I'm going to have them done tomorrow. If this doesn't fix it, I'll pull out the flashlight and crawl under the car.

I had the tires road-force balanced yesterday, and they had to spin the suspect tire on the wheel to get it balanced properly. I'm not saying that resolved the issue.

I'm heading out in the morning to dyno the car, so the highway run will tell me if it's fixed. If it isn't, I'll spend the weekend under the car. I'm running out of time to get this car 1/2 mile ready, as September is just around the corner (WannaGoFast in Clayton, GA).

vibration

check the inner face of the rear brake rotors..they usually get layered up with salt, dirt, rust and it forms in patches. I had my rotors skimmed on the car and it made it drive like new again. The previous owner had just spent £5500 on front rotors, pads, wheels, tyres etc.
Also check the integrity of the rear subframe front mounts usually the roght hand side goes first because of the amount of torque going through the rear axle.

the only thing that sucks is the fact that you cannot drive the car on the lift and check the drivetrain ( flex disc. driveshaft support) dues to the ABC suspension

How you mean that? Can you explain it further?

Well before this CL I had a CL500 W140 and I had a vibration around 50-70 mph and after checking the whole suspension wheels and tires we found no issues, so we put the car on the lift took the traction off and drove it, and saw that the support bearing for the driveshaft was bad.
Well like I said because of the ABC suspension you cannot do that with the W215

Yes that was my point, what has this to do with ABC? You cant start the car while on the lift? Or you cant put in a gear?
What if you go in Dyno mode via the secret menu in the instrument cluster?

Dyno Mode is just for that DYNO. if all 4 wheels are off the ground you cannot start the car ( I mean you can but you will get a ABC Light right away)

I installed a new transmission mount last night and a new rear flex disk this evening. I'll report back soon on whether this cures the vibration. My guess is no. Fortunately the vibration disappears once I hit 90-100 mph.

Sorry, but I haven't located it yet. I suspect the front right hub bearing is the culprit. It was likely damaged from a series of very bad potholes I hit the day after buying the car. I'll report back after I pull the bearing in a couple weeks.

I have a faint vibration at the speeds mentioned, and still cannot figure out where its coming from. Fresh tires and balance, and no bent/lateral damaged wheels. Also did it before the lowering links.

Thanks Anthony, I just replace the transmission mount and it actually made it worst. So, today I replace the rear tires and balance the front and the vibration is much better but still there. I'm assuming it might be the damper now, have it on order and hopefully will take care of issue.

Thanks

Was this ever resolved? I just put two new tires on and had 3 of 4 wheels repaired for bends. Vibration still there. No significant wheel bearing play. Dealer check motor and tranny mounts as well as flex discs and all appeared ok. Im thinking driveshaft balance and/or bearing at this point. Thoughts? Drive shaft bearings are cheap. How many are there? 1 or 2? Being as cheap as they are im inclined to do it anyway. If nithing else it will eliminate that as a possibility. Is there anywhere that balances driveshafts? I called a shop here (Missouri) and they said they only do domestic driveshaft balancing.
