New brakes on my CL63 from Racing Brake WOW

So just as I'm getting used to my car after only having it a couple weeks and thinking I couldn't get a better driving experience, I'm in need of new brakes on my CL63. A long time buddy of mine (ML63 AMG on this forum) tells me that now is the best time to upgrade the rotors and pads from OEM and recommended Racing Brake.

The main reason to go aftermarket was obviously cost, as the dealer wanted $1700 per rotor however I was told that not only would I be spending a quarter of what a full set of rotors and pads would be, the weight savings, longevity, overall performance would be highly noticeable. I went ahead and purchased all 4 rotors from Racing Brake, also got StopTech front pads and OEM rear pads. Warren at Racing Brake was super fast in shipping as well, the second I paid, the rotors went out the same day. Very nice!

Good GOD am I glad I did this! The car instantly felt lighter on it's feet, the steering felt super sharp, and boy does it bite down and slow this huge beast down! Like I said the main reason I did this was to save in OEM replacement cost but I gained so much more in overall performance it made it so much more worth it. If any of you are familiar with any of Arizona's twisty roads I tested the car through the Spars in Prescott and also Tucson's Mt. Lemmon besides the usual straight line acceleration, hard stopping. To say I was impressed was an understatement. Not only is this car awesome, but I never thought I'd also feel such a huge difference from loosing 30 some pounds on all 4 corners combined. If you need brakes, definitely don't go OEM, upgrade! It's way less and you get a much better product.

Congrats! Those rotors are bigger than your head!

The rotors make a massive difference and the best part is they cost waaaay less than stock. For our CL63 application the weight reduction is a whopping 38lbs of unsrpung rotating mass.

This is going to be my next mod after I finish my Eurocharged V6 tune w/ ROW airboxes.

In the meantime waiting for warren @ racingbrake to get back to me about upgrading to stainless steel brake lines and Castrol SRF fluid. Hopefully should be doing a write up soon on them. I did the SS brake line mods on my ML63 and it transformed the pedal feel and almost make it feel like an all out brembo BBK. Combined with the stoptech front pads they feel great.

For the record, rotatin unsrpung mass reduction on my ML63 reduced my 60ft times down by an astonishing 0.2 sec at the drag strip. Considering the M;63 is a massive 5300 pounds, the 1.8-1.9 60ft times was astonishingly repeatable pass after pass

I had them put on my CL63 2 years ago & couldn't be happier (I've recommended them in any of the brake posts I've seen here).

Mine were just a hair under 3k for Front/Rear & pads. Racing Brake posts here occasionally, and have offered free shipping to MB World members in the past as well.

I plan on doing a before/after dyno on the 2 piece rotors once my stock ones wear out. I suspect an additional 12-15 wheel TQ is possible from the 38lbs reduction in unsrpung rotating mass.

will keep you updated on the dynes as that time comes closer

One OEM rotor here in Europe costs 1200USD, for both rear and front.
All four are 4800 USD and brake pads (both front and rear) add about another 600USD. In total 5400 USD for OEM setup.
How much does this cost (all four rotors and pads) + what is the cost of shipping to Germany?

It was around $2800 that I paid for all rotors and pads, delivered. I bought the StopTech front pads and OEM rear pads as well. It was well worth it. Not sure what shipping to Germany would be, I think shipping I paid was around $60.

Also if you have an independent mechanic or can do the brakes yourself you would be saving a ton of money as well. My Mercedes dealer wanted to charge nearly $900 just in labor to do all the brakes

I saved big by going to my mechanic and he only charged me $360

Much better deal than OEM and a way better performing product too.

Did the same mod on ML63 (which has similar OEM rotors) and dropped about 36 lbs. it made a big difference in the way the car performed in every single aspect.

Behind ECU tune... This is probably the 2nd best modification you can do

Can't wait for my tune and boxes later! Loved seeing your results and really curious to see the before and after with the rotors when you get them.

So when you posting your tune and box results? Everyone I'm sure wants to see the sexy time results

With this money ($5400) you are close to purchasing the complete kit (including RB 6/4pot fixed piston calipers and oversize to 390/390mm front and rear rotors) for a true high performance brake system.

Thanks! Yes, I used the Sport pads. Best price I got was from Amazon and the part is the StopTech 309.1289

Resurrecting an old thread of mine, figured what better way to jump back in the forum with an update on the car's brakes and the car in general. Aside from a costly ABC issue (ABC pump, what else is new right) and needing new motor mounts and a transmission mount, the car has been awesome! Can't count the fluke incident of the 3 way hose that goes to the radiator that had to be shipped from Germany. Seriously, I was told that part never fails which is why they had it shipped from Germany haha

Since this post I've put on an additional 20k miles and the brakes are still strong and have a ton of life left on them. Pretty amazing considering the spirited driving through the mountains every now and then, a few high speed stops and frankly the fact this big sled weighs roughly 5k lbs. Characteristics are just as I reviewed them earlier on.

More updates in the future! Going to be showing off some pics not just of the good looks of the car but also the awesome scenery we have out here.

Where are you guys getting the crazy prices for OEM rotors? They're 850$ a piece MSRP and you can easily get them for about 600$ a piece online. The RB setup looks nice and it's 650$ a rotor...That's an average price for a 2 piece rotor...could be cheaper, but it's definitely better than the OEM 1 piece setup for roughly the same price. I'll pick a set up when my current rotors are toast.

Wow, I was going to say where are you getting your prices cause those are good and just checked AutohausAZ and saw that prices have dropped in 2 years. You're lucky you didn't have to get brakes years ago. Either way Racing Brake is the way to go because they're stronger, will last a lot longer and are way lighter. The OEM's were basically designed for Mercedes to make money every 30-40k miles on you.
