He didn't modify the muffler.

Deleting the Resonator & Secondary Cats will give you what you are looking for. I did that for my E55 & ML63 both sound great.
Removing the secondary cats will not cause a CEL as the sensors are located before the secondaries. However, if you're in a place where they do a visual checking you might fail the test.

OK here's the explosion of my system ('08 CL63)

Please explain this to me like I'm 5 years old the best way to get what you're suggesting because I am going to a Midas type place and I need to be specific as to what to tell them I want. I don't trust the hacks there to decide for me.

Also should I buy this and bring it into them?...

As suggested by another member in another post?

Here you go:

I don't know the diameter of the exhaust on the w215/w216. On the ML I put 3 inch pipes.
Regarding the X-pipe..... It's a personal preference. I installed it in place of the secondaries in my E55. If i had to do it again I won't install an X-pipe. It removed the AMG bark/growl and changed the sound to a more exotic tone.
In the ML63 I put straight pipes in place of the resonators. Got a little bit louder exhaust with more burbling & growl. You can find more about this topic in the W204 C63 or W211 AMG forums.
One more thing, when you get the piping or crossover, get stainless steel because it won't rust and will look better. It's recommended if you live in a place with snow or road salting.

Report & good luck

Re: The SS straight piping, should I buy the pipes and bring them into a Midas or would they have it in stock. I know they are a muffler shop but perhaps they don't have high quality piping.

I'm not from the US so I don't know about CA emission laws. All I know is they are stricter than other states. (you might pass the sniffer test, there will be no CEL when you delete the 2nd cats, but if someone does a visual and they know what they are doing you won't pass)
As for the piping, I didn't buy them first, the exhaust shop that did the mods for me had them in stock.
So it's up to you if you want to source them or let the installer get them.
