Service Required: Do Not Shift Gears, Visit Dealer

Last night, while driving, I got the following 2 error codes on my 2014 CLA (November delivery date)

1. Service Required: Do Not Shift Gears, Visit Dealer
2. Presafe functions limited; See Operators Manual

When I initially started the car, the check engine light was on. I drove about 15 miles before it sent into limp mode. I pulled into a parking lot and turned it off. When I restarted, the above mentioned codes appeared. I shut the engine down again and it no longer would start. Had to have it towed to Mercedes.

Anyone come across the same issue?

Hope it's nothing serious. If so, wonder how Mercedes will handle this.

What's your email? I will send you a copy of the invoice. Tried to upload it, however, it won't let me. It's 2 pages long. Look's like the most expensive replacement part was the Valve Body Assembly with Integrated Control Unit. I just happen to see what that part a lone would have cost me had it not been under warranty and it was $3000.00.

I did post a copy of it on mercedescla.org under CLA forum, and then CLA problems.

GLC 300

Happened to me on my 2016 GLC300. It has about 6,200 miles on it. I got the same error while I was at the dealership looking for a new car, so I was lucky that I could get a loaner car instead of having to tow it in.

My sales guy/friend was in the car with me with me when it happened, and he advised me to turn the car off and try restarting it, but that didn't help.

I looked at a few different threads on a couple websites and I couldn't find anyone that had this problem in a GLC. I also learned that there are several causes/fixes for this error so we will just have to wait and see what it is for the GLC!

I'll update you guys on what the dealership says went wrong and what they did to correct it!

Had the same thing happen to me. Car started but would not shift into gear. Called Mercedes and they had me step out and lock and unlock the car 15 times. That reset the system and it has not recurred. Hopefully it is gone!

Well if you didn’t keep your left hand on top of your head while doing that the fix won’t last

I had this happen to me, took it to Mercedes and they ended up quoting me 7 grand worth of stuff that needed to be fixed. One was the transmission valve body and that cost me 3025.00 on its own. Since my car isn’t under warranty anymore I had to pay for it all. After replacing everything, it’s been 7 months and it’s doing the same thing all over again. So if anyone is having this issue and your car isn’t under warranty I’d just take the 3 grand they will charge you for the part and go buy a different car.

Wow ... really sorry to hear about your gearbox issues!
My TCU also needed replacement about a year after purchase and luckily that whole mess was under warranty. Thank goodness the DCT has been behaving since then. The TCU (0002702700) part only is about $670 nowadays, so I guess its the multiple hours of labor and other related parts/supplies that rings up the cash drawer ... the repair order for that TCU fix was rather long.

I got the "Reverse not possible..." message and a lot more from my 2016 CLA250 73500 miles. Engine light on, "Collision Prevention Assist Plus inoperative...", "ABS inoperative....". The symptoms would come and go. Sometimes I would start it up and everything was fine and the dash lights were all off. Then while driving the messages would start again. Other times as soon as I turned the car on, dash warnings would appear. I took it to my local Mercedes expert repair shop (not the dealer) and he diagnosed the LF wheel rotation sensor was failing. A few months ago we replaced the RF wheel rotation sensor after a slew of ominous dash warnings. This time we replaced all of the wheel rotation sensors (except the RF which is only a few month old). Outcome - No more problems, no new transmission needed.

What a stressor. The Mercedes computer should detect the failed wheel rotation sensor and report it, and turn off the systems that depend on the wheel sensors, instead of reporting all these alarming false error messages. Methinks that even the brilliant engineers at Mercedes are going up a learning curve on designing automated systems. Lessons can be learned about computer systems for vessels that carry people from the FAA standards about computer systems that are used on airliners.

This was a life saver!!! I actually created an account just to thank you and corroborate that it worked! I’m in the middle of nowhere on a Friday afternoon with complicated travel plans and this was salvation! I’m so grateful...Thanks for sharing that!

Good to know... I had a GLK for 5 years before, never even seen any errors, but it happened on my new GLB on first week and then 10 months later... Error was parking related and the car restarted after the error. MB service upgraded the transmission software and hopefully it will not show up again...

THIS WORKED. Literally just made an account to come on and confirm that this worked for me and I haven't had an issue in the 2 days since. Dealership said I no longer need to bring it in.

THANK YOU!!

I read this here and thought to myself that there’s no way this will work. Tried it - locking and unlocking my car 15 times like in my relative’s cul de sac, looking like a huge dork.

BUT IT WORKED literally created this account to thank you. Appreciate you kind sir or ma’am. You’ve turned my panic off.

I’m still getting it towed home anyway. Going to ask some German car mechanics near me how to best fix this for the long term.
