On offer is an exquisite 1983 model Mercedes-Benz 280 GE Geländewagen (German for off-road vehicle) or G-Wagen. This example is a bespoke W461 purpose built on the special request of a VIP from the United Arab Emirates (original order number 6 2 878 00009)

It is a Greenline series delivered to Emirates Motor Company in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi on 05 / 11 / 1982 according to this vehicle’s Daimler AG issued Datacard. ‎
This special order was factory equipped with a larger six-cylinder inline 2.8-litre engine with fuel injection (110 kW/150 hp) and bears its original engine number 110994 10 003467. It features a four-speed manual transmission and reduction gearing, all-wheel drive capable of being engaged and disengaged on the move, 100-per-cent-locking differential locks on both rigid axles, power steering, and a sophisticated suspension with trailing arms and traverse links, coil springs and shock absorbers which make for excellent handling both on and off the road.

It was issued with original factory air-conditioning. Civilian customers were able to order the G as a station wagon with a short or long wheelbase, or as a convertible with a short wheelbase. A long-wheelbase two-door convertible was normally issued only in the military version. The example on offer is a rare two-door convertible with long-wheelbase in 2850 mm. Originally available in five colours, cream white, wheat yellow, colorado beige, carmine red and agave green, the present example was issued in cream white (colour code 9001).

The example on offer here was issued with the following SA codes and features, amongst others: 9001 (cream white colour), A71 (front and rear axle differential lock), C70 (power steering), M59 (cooling), Y55 (rear mounted fuel canister).

The interior is in immaculate condition, no rips or tears in the seats. There are no cracks in the dashboard; the floor is in great shape and not coming up. All the switches and controls work as they were supposed to when the truck was new.

The exterior is equally as nice. There is no evidence of this SUV ever being in an accident. All body panels are straight and the paint still shines bright. There are no rust spots or bubbles at all. It is a very straight and clean body. It is a very very impressive body without any issues at all; super straight and clean. There is no rust in the fenders as most of these G-Wagons have.

It bears VIN (vehicle identification number): WDB46121317027565.

The odometer currently reads 25,031 KMs. The kms are documented and are official by the Dubai License Bureau. Until 31/12/2009 it was serviced at the Authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership in Abu Dhabi (Emirates Motor Company). It has recently been serviced at qualified secondary market maintenance services providers Silber Arrows (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) and Auto Adriatique (Montreal, Canada). All parts on the vehicle are original OEM parts (as far as we are aware) with the notable exception of the restored paint.

The 2.8 Litre engine starts and runs beautifully. Open up the hood and you will find a super clean engine with a very low mileage 6-cylinder. All gears shift easily. Brakes are fairly new and were changed within the past year. The truck has new tires installed. We have all the invoices for all the repairs and work that was done to the vehicle over the course of its life. We had just done a complete service and fixed everything that needed to be fixed on the truck.

In this condition, bodystyle, and mileage; this car certainly has a rarity factor and can totally live up to the most critical G-Class enthusiast. This very early G-Wagon was the start of what is today, one of finest vehicles on the road today… and one of the most exclusive.

One of the most striking special orders of the time was for a 280 GE LWB jagdwagen or open shooting platform for the Saudi Arabian Royal household. In this car, the rear bench sits in the boot and in its former place you can find two very comfortable armchairs for hunters to aim from.
