open ashtray lid, take out ashtray insert. Pull up on the front of the wood trim piece in front of the shifter (the large part that contains the window switches). This piece should pop up, lifting the shifter surround ring along with it. if you need to actually disassemble the shifter assembly you should be able to inspect it from here. If you do have to remove screws be SURE, ABSOLUTELY SURE not to drop anything down there or you very well may be looking at an expensive repair.

Oh ok, i seem to remember seeing clips that held the shift gate on the shifter assembly when i took mine apart a while ago. i'd just poke around and see what you can do. Careful though, if its cold where you are the plastic will be more prone to break when you try to bend it.

Did anyone manage to repair that sliding shifter screen that stops stuff from falling into shifter? Pics please?

i took the four torques screw off and remove the top half. You half to unplug the connector between them but it’s dam hard to plug it back in! The top part is more than one piece and I can’t figure out how the tabs work to separate them so I can plug the connector in. I alreade broke one tab, I may have to break all of the ones I can see if I can’t find out how to do it.

Thanks John,
Every time I touch a plastic part in my ‘99 CLK 430, I end up breaking something. I was reluctant to disassemble the shifter (as you have done), so I “fished” the front and rear portions of the screen (that were 1 piece), and glued them carefully with a bit of epoxy. It’s been over a month, and it’s holding.
Good luck, and please keep me posted on what happens.

Mark
