Difference between 98 CLK and 2000? Options on 98?
A friend of mine is trying to purchase a 98 CLK320, it has 47000 miles on it with extended warranty. I dont' know much about CLKs, can you guys tell me what were the major differences between 98 and 2000?
Also, what options were available to get on a 98?
Is this a good price if I get the car checked out and everthing if fine with it?
Also, what are some common repairs on these from 50K to 100K? Are most of these covered by the warranty?
Thanks,

02 CLK 430 Coupe
98 has a black body kit, looks terrible IMO. Also, has some crappy looking wheels, and also has the side turn signals on the front quarter panel instead of the back of the side rear view mirrors. Also the steering wheel does not have the stereo controls, and the gauges are old MB style. I used to have a 99 320, which basically looks the same as a 98, and I really was annoyed about all these little differences.
I highly recommend you try to get a 2000 or later.

'98 CLK is fine
Oooooo the guy above complains it does not have the turn signals on the side mirrors and the stereo controls on the steering wheel. First - the signals on teh mirrors is stupid looking and was a big design mistake.
The stereo on the steering wheel, while convenient is not a big deal.
I drive a '99 clk 430 and think it is great - indistinguishable from later models regardless what the guy above says.

98 CLK 320/99 E430
Nah, i think they look better when they are rolling , they almost and i stress the word almost, look chrome. they at least have a small lip, 00 and up are dull gray and dull looking. Everything else about the exerior is better on a 00 and up.

ewww the 98 and 99 CLK320 rims are nasty they look almost like cheap hub caps made of tin foil. Personally i also hate the black body kit and turn signals on the frnders (looks aftermarket).
I would not consider a CLK under the year 2000.

2000 CLK 320
I would have to agree with BlackC230Coupe about those 98 and 99 rims. They are the cheapest and ugliest rims out there. They must use those to lower the cost because I've heard they put those on the bottom line S classes in Europe. The engineers at MB must have been on crack when they designed those rims. IMHO

CLK 320
The wheels are terrible. I have had to put them back on my car because my crappy rims are bent all up and the tires are bald. I hate those wheels more every time I look at my car. I think I look like an idot driving around in a lowered benz on those fugly factory rims. I have got to get some new ones. My clk320 is black and I have no problem with the body kit except that it has no side skirts. I do wish there were no side signals but I am glad that I do not have the ones in the side mirrors. Except on a silver car I do not like the signals in the mirrors. It blends in on a silver car but on anything else looks out of place when not flashing. I think you should always get newer if you can afford newer (just not the w209 IMO UGLY). If you have the means and can find one get a 430 (i assmue that a 55 is way out if you are looking at a 320) I do wish that I had a V-8 and not a V-6 although this V-6 does do pretty well.

OOOooo...i taste sour grapes. the CLK430 is virtually the same from the outside except the turning signal for 99 is on the side fender and the 00-02 has'em on the side mirror LIKE ALL OTHER MERCEDES-BENZ. if it's a design mistake why do people try to change the mirrors and why do the new CLK and E continues to use that kind of mirrors.
interior is a whole new story. the steering wheel was changed from the crappy looking one to the NEW multi function steering wheel, the dash on the 00 has the multi-function display, the material that made the dash board was also changed to make a less plastic feel, the Command system (not sure if the 99 already have it, but the 98 model sure don't have Command), and there is also the SOS teleaid added onto the 2000 models.

the warranty on the 98 through today are all the same i think. it is 4 yrs/50k miles. Any Starmark used MB will only have a 30 days warranty unless you buy the extended warranty when you buy the car (i'm not sure if you can get extended warranty on a Starmark pre-owned MBs).
