Trunk Lockout, DEFINITIVE simple solution, battery replacement
If your battery is fading and you are removing it for replacement, DO NOT, if possible, close your trunk lid or you will discover it locks itself independent of door locks. Do not waste your time with the X box jump strategy talked about elsewhere as it does not work for most people, myself included.
If your battery is dead or you are locked out of trunk, simply remove your metal key from your remote by slightly depressing the little gray tab, and slide it out. Insert into trunk lock and turn to LEFT about 10 oclock and press in.
Turning any other direction or position will not work!
Your trunk will open and you will not be frantic or have to mess around with trying to attach jumper cables to one of the 3 small terminals in the tiny X box near the fuse box and then look for a ground when no decent ones exist nearby!

It's a pity people damage their cars due to frustration due to incomplete or less than useful information when the solution is so simple.
I paid $175 for a new OEM Mercedes battery from the dealer here in Hawaii with 10% discount... Would be much cheaper on mainland.
Walmart had the MAXX-H8 LN5 49 14 for $136, but it has only 750 cold cranking amps, Sears and Costco were useless.
Aloha

That is if your key works alot of times they never work because they never get used or previous owners replace them with random blanks or keys becuse they lost there blade. I see it almost every day

Many people have tried exactly what you have perscribed, only to discover that since the key had not been used since the car left the factory - it doesn't work without a lot of patience and finesse.
On later cars, if the battery is in place but dead, sending current to the positive cable under the hood does work. If the battery has an internal short or is not in the vehicle, there is an open circuit. That may be why some cannot use the port you mentioned.

It makes sense that with no battery connected the X box jumper solution would not work since the trunk release is dependent on a complete electric circuit that would not exist without a battery connected. It is a real pain to use that method in any case.
The solution mentioned is MECHANICAL and not electric dependent which is one reason it was engineered as such. It does not make sense that infrequent use using the mechanical lock would render it inoperable. If the key turns it ought to work.
Most people, myself included were not able to open the trunk fiddling around with it. That is because we did not understand the importance of turning the key LEFT at 10 O'CLOCK and pressing in. This solution seems lost on some but should not be as it is so simple.
One could always leave one rear seatback slightly open for that type of emergency and crawl into the trunk if they preferred...
