Brakes Question

At what mileage should you even think about changing the Rotors on a CLK 208? Had the pads replaced at 20k, now they say I need rotors, 5k later?? What the F! (Talking about fronts here.)

Any help / insight / support would be great!

MB won't turn/shave rotors, they feel it is unsafe...

they suggest you change the rotors when there is about 8 or 9mm left, which is basically when you change your pads...

that is not practical for most people... i think its safe to burn out 2 sets of pads before needing to change the rotors... 3 sets of pads at most...

it also depends on the driving/braking style you have

Depends on how hard you have been driving your car.Why not change them out yourself,Not too hard almost like changing a honda rotor..opps did i say that..I believe the dealer wants a few hundred just for labor

I think the response I got from the cashier at my dealership applies when I was paying for a $40 bottle of touch-up paint.... she said, "The last I checked, you drove in in a Mercedes, right?"

the price quote that SMYTHE EUROPEAN gave me about 10 months ago when i brought in my car for "B" service was $1750.00 for 4 rotors, front/rear pads , and labor. After i heard that ridiculous price, I have never brought my car back there again for service. I actually ended up buying front/'rear brembo cross drilled/slotted rotors for around $300, and semi metallic pads for $130, and paying a local shop $180 to install everything. A savings of over $1000 , PLUS i got a performance upgrade out of it =)

clkal, that's some great savings there. Can you give me the information for where you got everything? I am in need of a job just like that. Also can you tell me what shop you took it too? I don't mind driving the distance for some savings.

Thanks.

I have been told that OEM pads only last about 12-20k, and the rotor would last about 25-35k.

If I to use semi metalic pads it would increase the wear on the rotor.
Couple question to the members using brembo cross drilled rotors with semi metalic pads: How long have ur setup lasted?
Would the wear on the pad be less if I use the OEM pad with
cross-drilled rotors?

Thanks.

I have 23,000 miles on my car, and the front pads are due for replacement soon, and due to the fact that MB replaces rotors with pads, I just ordered the C32 AMG brakes with Brembo rotors all around from www.autowerksdirect.com

I think my car has about 28,000 miles, and the brakes are also due to be changed soon... but no brake warnings yet...

i don't know how it would be on a benz, but i remember a friend using organic pads on his new set of cross drilled rotors on a rice rocket and he told me that the rotors ate through his pads in less than a month. If you upgrade to cross drilled rotors, i would suggest that you only use semi metallic pads.
