Replacing rear bearing by replacing housing with new bearing.
Hi. I have a 2003 Mercedes convertible and the rear bearing is going out .. the thump thump sound changes when I go around a curve. Can anyone tell me how to change the rear bearing with buying the housing that already has the bearing in it. I went to a shop and they said they were going to order the whole piece and that's easier. It seems a rear bearing repair is a little more involved than front... the videos I've seen seem to indicate you have to disengage the rear axle. So if someone could tell me what that part is that i can buy with bearing in place and has instructions on how to do that I'd appreciate. i have a 2000 coupe I'm kinda using for parts but i tried to swap front knuckles and they seem different. so i dont know if the the rear housing with rear bearing can be swap or is advisable. as an aside i swapped the front auxillary fans and housing and seems the fans on the 2003 were heavier which gave me pause. seems to work but curious if they are different. any help on rear bearing repair is appreciated. Walter
ps..how do you confirm which side is bad. I believe its the passenger rear. Thanks!

Jack both rear tires off the ground and of course no parking brake on and in neutral, turn the tires by hand and if they are bad you should hear and or feel them. So far I haven't had to deal with mercedes rear wheel bearings. It is normally a pretty straight forward job.
