Clk500 Tail light malfunctioning

Hi
I’ve posted this before but haven’t really found a solution .
i hade tried everything from
1 changing all bulbs
2 cleaning contacts
3 checking volt readings

readings are all over the place

I’ve also noticed the malfunctions change from 2 to 4
so I will have
left tail light malfunction and substitute left light warming

then other days I will have left and right tail light and substitute light warmings

some days it will just be 1 malfunction
just tail light left ??

any ideas ?

also have a issue with the rear end swaying under acceleration?
normally when reaching speeds of 60mph and over

2003 CLK 320 convertible

If the malfunctioning light is one of the bulbs in the tail lights in the trunk lid it could be the ground wire in the flex conduit that runs from those lights had broken.

Hi Jinark

thanks for the response.
the malfunction is coming from the actual Tail lights .

from what I understand ,

the lower bulb is you actual tail light , if this fails then
you upper most bulb that is you brake light becomes your Tail and brake light .

this is the substitute warning I am getting on my instrument cluster along with tail light malfunction.

Like I said one day it will be just left side warnings
and other days it will be both left and right ?

i know the lower bulbs are working because when I open the car they come on for a second then go off again .

I've also taken a reading off the battery and that all good .

so just to clarify, the lights in the boot lid are ok .
are you saying that there might be a bad earth in boot lid light that is causing issues with tail lights ?
