Steering wheel shaking between 40-70mph; 19" wheels on CLK 430
I just got some 19" wheels for my 2000 CLK430 and have noticed my steering wheel shaking considerably between 40-70mph. After installing wheel spaces for the front tires, the shaking has dropped significantly but is still there.
The tire guys told me it's because the wheels are too heavy for the car. I was wondering if there's anyone else who's had this problem and how they fixed it. Just got the wheels balanced. Thanks! |
How thick are your spacers and are they hub centric? If they are not hub centric, your wheel is not centered on your hub, and it can shake even if perfectly balanced.
And technically you are are in the wrong forum, but for this question it does not matter, and W209 people are superior in every way to W208 people. |

Whoops, accidentally clicked on W209 instead of 208. I'll repost it there, but any help I could get from the "superior" W209 folks would be much appreciated!

I think anything less than 10mm is not hub centric usually.
Basically, do your spacers have flange, or are they a flat disc? |
It can be so many things... The 5mm spacer are a problem on 209's for sure.
But it could be poorly fitting wheels, poor balancing, An out of round tire, What type of rims are "too heavy" for your car?:eek: Did you have the wheels balanced on the car, in addition to the Hunter machine balancing? |
Also just to state the obvious here, I would verify my tire pressure myself. I've had a noticable wobble before (at higher speeds) and corrected it by simply balancing my front two tires' pressures myself.
