Yes, you will get lower MPG with a tune, but not much, so it's unlikely it will be a major expense compared to the tune itself which will run about US$1K. For that, you'll get about a 10% bump in HP. The next step would be headers, and now you're in the US$2,500 range just for parts. Of course you could go all out and do a supercharger, but now you're in the US$15K++ range, and at that point, you could just trade up for a CLK550.

I see. Still, you'd spend about that to turn your CLK320 into a supercharged version, and you still wouldn't come close to the performance of a CLK550. And I'm not sure you'd see much difference in fuel economy between the modified 3.2l V6 and a stock 5.5.l V8 - I routinely get 19MPG around town in my CLK550, and it goes up from there when I spend less time in heavy traffic and more time on open roads.

The SL is a great automobile, but it has some drawbacks as a used car. The electronics are far more complex and prone to failure than the W209. Also, it's ABC (Active Body Control) system can be very problematic and crazy expensive to repair, even as a DIY. It uses the power steering pump and fluid for its hydraulics, but its valves and cylinders are bad to start failing around 50K miles. Just on bad valve can cost nearly $1k just in parts!
