How do you tell if engine mounts need changing?

Mainly, you'll feel a lot of engine vibration. If you feel a strong vibration in reverse, then it;s the rear/transmission mount (that one is very easy). If you feel the engine "chugging" at idle, or you feel a bit of a "jerk" when you accelerate, then it's the left/right engine mounts.
As for a DIY, here's the WIS docs:

http://benzbits.com/w209/RearEngineMount.pdf
Note that WIS has you doing a lot of work to lift the engine for the front mounts. While that is the official method, you may be able to replace the mounts by gently lifting the engine just enough to remove pressure.

I changed mine (engine and transmisison mounts) back in January-2014. At the time, the mileage on my car was 180K miles.
Sympton before the change:
Vibrations in Drive but not in Neutral or Park. These vibrations were more noticeable when the engine was cold; like in the morning.
My indie charged me 3 hours for the replacement. I was there waiting and it took him 3-3.5 hours to replace these mounts.

hey rodney i do not feel at all vibration at idle. at all. but i feel sometimes a jerk like mass transfer when i accelerate second gear between 2000rpm and 4000rpm but then again this happens only when engine is kinda cold and not in operating temperatures.... i have done 250 000 km

Its tight but not bad... you will need a hoist (for comfort) and jack to hold the motor up and adjust, drop the rack and pinion BUT DONT slide it out of the steering shaft!!!! IMO.... patience is a virtue! Did mine last fall 3hrs with a oil change...
