command frozen

Hi,
My command unit in my clk w209 has frozen.
When I start the engine the mercedes logo appears, I can hear the radio but none of the buttons on the command unit work.
I cant switch between radio/sat nav/cd/turn on or off manually.
I can however use the controls on the steering wheel to change the radio station and volume/toggle through the options.
It does also turn off when i take the key out of ignition so at least it doesnt stay on.
I thought it might be the blue tooth module but i have left it out and no change.
My cd 6 cd changer also does not pick any discs up, it says cd error or no cd.

Any thoughts on how to fix this/reset the system?

Hi,
silly question - I couldnt find the fuse box under the hood.
I checked passenger & driver & removed both covers to see if was underneath.

Is it somewhere else im not looking?

thanks

You don't say what model Clk you drive, but I think the fuse box is in the same place. It's under a rather large black plastic cover on the driver's (left) side at the back of the engine compartment near the firewall - just inside the hood hinge on that side.

Hi,
its a clk 320 coupe (w209)

i did check there, removed the black plactic cover.
There is a black box but it looks welded shut & doesnt look like a normal fuse box with clips.
I will send a picture of this in a few hours.
Thanks

Go to page 431 of this manual - yours does not look like that after you remove the drip cover? That's what mine looks like.

The front fuse panel (on the front SAM) is located under the hood on the driver's side of the car, behind shock tower, and between the fender and brake fluid reservoir. It has to latch clips on the front.

BTW, you might want to update your forum user's profile to include your location (at least country) and exact car model. This will help us better answer your questions.

There had any clasp clips to open the black box.

Hi,
thanks for the reply
That's exactly what I'm looking , i'm a little confused as under the plastic tray there isn't an obvious fuse box.
i've attached some images, there is a black box but it looks welded shut....

OK, you have found the fuse box, but instead of a couple of spring slips, it is closed with a couple of screws (looks like Allen head). Remove those and the lid should lift up.

As for updating your forum user's profile, see here:

Hi,
thanks for the advice, you are right that is the fuse box.
I took out fuse 64, it did shut down the command unit , but when putting fuse back in the system comes back on and still frozen. When I took out fuse 64 the door locking system did not work or boot button.
weirdly enough fuse 23, 24, 36 do not exist at driver side fuse panel.
I also took out fuse 20 from the boot but that just silenced the radio. Any other tips?

It's OK that those fuses are not there - it just means your car does not have those options. It seems like your COMAND unit has died.

Hi,
surely it cant be dead.
It does turn on, the radio plays, i can change stations from the steering wheel controls, change volume.
Turn engine off it powers down as should.
Its literally just frozen on one screen & no buttons on the unit work.

The only other think you could try is hook it up to SDS and check for codes, and then do a reset. But my guess is that it's an internal failure of some sort. If you are so inclined, you could remove it from the car and tear into it to see if it's something repairable, but likely you need a replacement. Maybe a good time to go with a more updated aftermarket system.
