Think I have a hose missing

Hi,
I have just bought a 2008 W209 320 cdi and noticed I have oil splattered on the underside of my bonnet near the filler cap and I noticed a bit lower down there is an oval shaped hole which I assume should have a hose connected to it but it doesn't have anything.

I have no idea what the part would be, what it would be called or what it does. I don;t even know if there should be something there so am struggling to find any information.

Not sure the best way of trying to identify it as its not there so thought I would put it out to you guys to see what you could come up with :-)

yes, that is the missing air intake tube to your air filter housing. Im surprised that you dont have a check engine light on currently. Are you missing this same piece on the other side of the engine?

That's exactly it and funnily enough it is missing from both sides. Is there any reason why these woudl eb removed?

If you cannot locate the other side's part number, send me a PM and I'll look it up for you.. More than likely they removed it when installing new air filters and forgot them. Possibly they came loose and fell off?? but I doubt that as they are generally wedged into place real well. It can cause a check engine light if they are not connected, plus you are sucking in hot air which helps nothing.

My only question is: why would that cause the oil splatter?

Unrelated to the oil spatter. Gotta clean and determine where that's coming from.

Exactly my plan, looking where the oil seems to be centred from it seems its around the filler cap. I'm wondering if there was some surplus oil around the filler cap and the air coming through the air ducts whilst I was driving down the motorway (I had a 200 mile journey) has blown it over the engine cover.
Maybe grasping at straws but as I say looking at where the oil seems to stem from and the lack of air duct directing the air properly does make sense
