Wheels

Hi All,

I am new to this forum and am seriously considering buying a clk500. However, I am less than impressed with the stock wheels. What are some good wheel choices for this car? I would think that some 18"s would look nice and fill the wheel wells. Also what are the going price for the stock 17"s, should I sell these after upgrading?

Practicality-wise, you should go with 18's. But 19's look much better on a CLK. There are many choices out there: HRE is the most popular brand these days, AMG, Brabus, Carlsson all make nice wheels for your car.

I dont recommend you to sell the stock 17's. You will find it handy when you sell the car in the future 'cause dealers always prefer to take the car back as bone stock. If you sell the 17's now, you will have a tough time finding another set of used wheels at a good price.

If you need more input, you are more than welcome to shoot me an e-mail.

Thanks, Harris... would 19"s fit without any problem (roll fenders, etc.)? Also what is the fattest tire size/profile that would fit with 19's?

Given the correct offsets, you should have no problem fitting 19's on the CLK. Wheels size should be 19x8.5/9.5, tire sizes are 235/35/19 and 265/35/19.

Thanks for the note, however, I am not too impressed with the stock AMG wheels. Furthermore, I find the stock AMG wheels for the SL55, horrid! I would hope the first thing someone does when purchasing this car would be to replace the wheels.

BTW, what did you replace your wheels with?

Your Feedback appreciated

Folks,

I saw these wheels on ebay and I would like to hear your thoughts. Is the price right? Will these fit on a CLK500? Any other thoughts?

A set like these should go for 6k+ so this would be a very big discount hehe. I am sure the front wheel will fit but not sure if 19x10 in the back will. I think best setup for the clk is 19x8.5 in front and 19x9.5 in the back. But hm..how can this guy sell these rims for so cheap, its like a 60% off from original price. Just be careful on ebay!

I hear ya, I just priced these and they go for ~$5,000 (without tires). I talked to a dealer and he says he is able to fit the 10's on the CLK

I live right where they are located so I would be able to see them in person. It still is a bit low...

hmm..19x10 wont rub? maybe thats the max it will go then, but imo i think 19x9.5 is best. But up to you! i think you should go see how they look and see if they can really fit in on your car first. Just be careful with ebay!

A few notes......

I have a feeling that those wheels are meant to be for the CLK (W208), if they are, then you should take a look at this thread: https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...threadid=67497

Mind you, the 209 and 203 share very similar offsets numbers. I am afraid you will have more rubbing with 265s (if those are really 208 offsets).

Those are HRE 540 (not 540R). The style is kind of old, very few people buy them these days. You will have a tougher time selling them a few years from now. If you're looking for used HRE, you should check and see if he has sold his set or not: https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...threadid=68649

Good info, Harris…

A question… a 265 tire is 10.4 inches wide in the widest area. If you mount this tire on a 9.5” wheel the widest area would be 10.4 inches due to the tire. If you now mount it on a 10” wheel then the widest area is still 10.4 inches. Therefore, the limiting factor is the tire in both cases. Why would a 10” wheel make a difference if the absolute limiting dimensions are contributed by the tire? I understand if you mounted the same tire on an 11 inch wheel, then the wheel would contribute to the widest part.

I hope that made sense.

A 9.5" wheel and a 10" wheel will have different offsets (especially on a custom fitment wheel). HRE makes their wheels to the tightest fitment because they want to give you the most lip. Another thing is the brand of the tire. A 265 Pirelli might be equivalent to a 275 (or 265.5) Toyo T1-S. Some tires have a more squared sidewall and some have a more rounded sidewall. The guy with the C32 has P7000 tire, which has a very squared sidewall, therefore, added his wrong offsets of the wheel, he has rubbing problem even with a 255 tire.

I apprecaite the feedback. i will be checking out the wheels tommorow, and I wanted to know - how can one determine if the HRE wheels are actually authentic? Is there a serial number that can be checked against some kind of database. These wheels do not come with the HRE center caps so that is not a consideration.

Thanks!
